Powerful stories. Shared experiences.
We were proud to be part of @thelateshows , celebrating incredible art, collaboration and cultural heritage across the North East 💫 🌃
Huge thanks to @patrick_ziza , @paul_stan_nataraj and @efuasutherland . Rooted in the North East, their art brings forward powerful and often overlooked stories, connecting them to wider global histories shaped by colonialism.
Developed through @contesteddesires residencies in Newcastle, Amsterdam, Budapest, Lisbon, Turin and Santiago, it was a real joy to share the work with our Late Shows audience.
Thank you to everyone who came by, and to all those who made it possible.
More about the artwork in the images…
✨Ziza’s durational performance reimagined maps and found objects to reveal colonial traces and hidden hierarchies, animating ceramic forms alongside domestic figurines and collectables.
✨Paul presented sound installations shaped by collaborative listening with communities in South Shields and Budapest, and collective responses to colonial voyages rooted in the collections at Lisbon’s National Museum of Natural History and Science.
✨Elisabeth’s films shared expanding research into Black and African lives in Newcastle, through retracing historical sites and interviews with Beverley Prevatt-Goldstein and Pat Poinen - founders of NEEACA and African Lives in Northern England.
We warmly thank the artists taking part. Contested Desires is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. In the UK, we are grateful for the support of @acegrams , @heritagefunduk and @communityfoundationnortheast and @newcastlecouncil 's Newcastle Culture Investment Fund.

As part of Contested Desire: Constructive Dialogues (CDCD) @contesteddesires , my second residency at the Museo Egizio in Turin @museoegizio followed my first at the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago @museodelamemoria , Chile. Each residency opened a different world: in Turin, I was struck by the monumental presence of ancient Egyptian artefacts. They revealed Europe’s enduring imperial fixation with Egypt.
The durational performance approached archival material and records as if they were living sources, unsettling fixed notions of power, beauty, spirituality, and inheritance. The embodied figure became an unexpected interlocutor mediating between the vitrined relics and the visitors who view them.
Contested Desire: Constructive Dialogues is a programme that investigates colonial heritage and its ongoing imprint on contemporary culture.

Free to Roam with @patrick_ziza and Mwenza Blell at @giftfest offered space to consider who gets to move freely, who and by whom the world is built for, and how we find - or create - the third spaces where we can belong.
The workshop began with an invitation from Ziza and Mwenza to take our shoes off and put on one of the many mismatched pairs laid out. We then walked - often unevenly and clumsily - in these new shoes, pausing to ask each other questions.
This led to a conversation between Ziza and Mwenza. Ziza spoke about creating ‘third’ spaces through embodied performance where traditions and futures meet. Moving between lived experience, theory and creative practice, the conversation asked urgent questions about freedom, belonging and resistance - is it ever possible to truly be in someone else’s shoes? And what does it mean to be free within systems structured by deep asymmetries?
Thank you so much to Ziza and Mwenza for making visible what is so often unseen; to our amazing audience and their rich insightful questions. And to GIFT for this collaboration.
💫 Ziza will be continuing these explorations in an open studio at D6 for @thelateshows , in a durational performance, alongside work by @efuasutherland and @paul_stan_nataraj .

Free To Roam is a new body of work by artist Ziza, presented in conversation with Mwenza Blell. The project explores Western knowledge systems - including religion, art history and scientific inquiry - and how power is upheld across these frameworks. Drawing on oral histories, speculative world‑building and personal heritage, the work questions how everyday structures produce authority, and whose experiences are recognised, valued or erased.

ANNOUNCEMENT 📣
Part of our IK KIN programme, we are excited to host Only Breath by Breath Quartet
26 March | Doors 7PM start 7.30PM
A live immersive durational performance where electronic sound, voice, movement, and ritual converge around the elemental act of breathing.
Only Breath unfolds over 3 hours as a shared sensory environment moving between sound installation, meditation, and dance floor. Across four movements — WAKE, FLIGHT, DREAM, DANCE — the audience is guided through shifting states of perception and embodied exploration.
Fragments of mythic text, layered electronic soundscapes, vocal improvisation, choreography, and projection create a living feedback loop between sound, body, and space. Audiences are invited to move, rest, listen, and dance within the performance.
Breath Quartet is a collective of four artists: Patrick Ziza (movement), Marcus Herne (sound), James Merrell (visuals), and Margot Wilson (artist and founder). Their fully improvised performances explore breath as rhythm, presence, and collective attunement.
Tickets now live on DICE.
