We're delighted to welcome @efuasutherland back to Newcastle as she continues to expand her research on the interconnected stories of black and African people in the North East of England. In this current @contesteddesires residency, building on her time in Newcastle in 2024 and 2025, Elisabeth is delving into the city’s theatres and archives to uncover stories of performers who toured the UK and other parts of Europe from the mid-1800s to the early 20th century. The landscape of her investigation sprawls across press archives, theatre programmes, sheet music and thrifted books by abolitionist authors. A key focus is the troupe of formerly enslaved performers managed by Sam Hague, whose visit to Newcastle featured figures such as James Alan Bland and the elusive Mr. Kool Kennedy, working within - and against - the world of blackface minstrelsy. The photos capture Elisabeth’s work in progress performance at Dance City, 2024, tracing histories including... ✨ circus performer Olga Brown, also known as Miss La La, who visited Newcastle, pictured with her performance partner Kaira Blanche in the late 1800s; ✨Arthur Wharton, the world’s first black professional football player, who moved to Darlington from Jamestown, Accra and played against Newcastle; ✨the abolitionist activist Henry ‘Box’ Brown, who toured the UK after gaining freedom in the US, ✨ and the social reformer, abolitionist and statesman Frederick Douglass. Photos: @flyfilmsuk With special thanks to North East of England African Community Association and the Africa Lives in the Northern England- who provided an invaluable introduction to some of these stories. Thanks to support from the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, @heritagefunduk , @aceagrams ,@paulhamlynfoundation and the @communityfoundationnortheast and @newcastlecouncil 's Culture Investment Fund. #ContestedDesires #ArtForChange #DecolonizeCulture #Europe #Colonialism #CreativeEurope #ArtAndHeritage #DecolonialArt #CulturalDialogue #d6studio

Proud to share that Black Planetarium has reached 2500 people after an 8 week exhibition at @musiccenterla ! This inaugural exhibition at The Music Center LA’s Digital Arts Space on #Jerrymossplaza was curated by Beata Calinska @Futureofnonfiction 💐 Extending @K.Hailesilassie ’s Ancestral Algorithm (2020)—a cartography of 6,500 symbols from 20 African languages—the Black Planetarium exhibition was reimagined with co-director Ainslee Alem Robson and Ghanaian choreographer Elisabeth Efua Sutherland through the algo-rhythms of Adowa, an Ashanti practice of movement in which the body itself narrates a story, and becomes an archive. Black Planetarium is a space for rest, connection and imagination, and beyond its physical form, a vessel of knowledge-generation and ancestral memory. So much gratitude to the people and institutions who supported us along the way, helping this work come to life.
