Dune Lankard, Founder and President of Native Conservancy (@nativeconservancy ), is our Keynote speaker on Thursday, May 7th. Dune has founded and co-founded numerous nonprofit organizations and his work has helped secure the preservation of more than one million acres along the Gulf of Alaska coastline. Dune’s leadership in Alaska has directly supported Indigenous-led ocean farming, food sovereignty, and environmental sustainability. Dune will discuss the challenges and successes of the growing seaweed sector in Alaska and provide recommendations for us here in BC.

Sea Otter Island has returned to Indigenous hands. NDN Collective, through its community development arm NDN Holdings, has finalized a deal transferring title of Sea Otter Island in Orca Inlet, near Hawkins Island and Cordova, Alaska, to the Eyak Community Land Trust. “Through multiple deals facilitated by NDN Holdings over the last couple years, the Eyak people now have land and waterway access back — which will ensure the ecology and biodiversity in the area is stewarded in a good way,” said Nick Tilsen, founder and CEO of NDN Collective. The land is now wholly owned by the Eyak Community Land Trust and will be used for cultural and ecological education, gatherings, and stewardship. This follows a 2024 land return along Eyak Lake and reflects ongoing efforts to restore Eyak land and waterway access. “Securing our Eyak land back is critical, because our land has been taken and exploited since Territorial Days in the mid-1850s, with land issues exacerbated by Statehood in 1959 and the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act in 1971,” said Dune Lankard, Elder and Trustee with the Eyak Community Land Trust. “Our lands have continued to be divided up by individuals, the state, the federal government, and private corporations. With government agencies like @epagov and @noaa gutted from federal funding cuts, *we* are the last line of defense to protect our oceans and coastlines. Today, January 23, is the last day to submit public comment urging decision-makers to halt plans for offshore drilling expansion. Opposing oil drilling is advocating for the protection of our favorite beaches, local surf spots, thriving wildlife, food that sustains us, coastal economies, and a clean energy future. As we ring in the new year, here’s a little story about the power of manifestation (sounds cheesy, but it works!) At Sway we make compostable packaging materials with seaweed – and this year, we planned to bring them into the mainstream. This year wasn’t easy for anybody and we were met with unique hurdles related to scaling totally new materials! Despite the setbacks, we kept going. And by the end of the year, Sway… 🌳 Dramatically improved our products ✅ Earned compost certification 📦 Expanded our packaging formats with partners like @ecoenclose , and grew our availability with new partners @atlanticpkg and @anewearthproject 🌞 Hit commercial scale with beloved brands 🌊 Shared our vision for a thriving material future on stage at TED ✨ Featured in a docuseries alongside Jane Goodall all about climate called ‘HOPE’ 🏆 Became a 2025 Best Invention (and somehow earned a feature on the cover!!) This work truly would not be possible without our community alongside us championing seaweed materials. So yes – we believe in the power of manifestation.
