The Godmother of Urban Agriculture came on BETTER this month and we went ALL the way in. Food apartheid, seed sovereignty, what solidarity actually looks like versus what gets performed for likes, Rise & Root Farm, and why the food system is not broken, not failing, not in need of a rebrand.
It is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Karen says all the quiet parts out loud, she’s been in the soil and the fight longer than most people have been paying attention.
Ten years of friendship and I am forever the grateful student.

Our film has always lived in community spaces, and now we’re making more room for community.
This Black History Month, we’re releasing a 60-minute version of Farming While Black.
Screening the film for farmers, elders, students, teachers, allies, and organizers, we’ve learned shorter can be more accessible. Making it easier to host community screenings that fit real schedules. Easier to use in classrooms without rushing the conversation. Easier to leave space after conference, company, and festival screenings for dialogue, reflection, and action.
At 60 minutes, Farming While Black becomes an enhanced tool for educators, allies, and communities building food sovereignty and cultural memory in real time.
This February, we’re honoring Black history as a living practice. One screening, one classroom, one conversation at a time.
