Finally recapping the incredible slow fashion day at @uprosebrooklyn Climate Justice Lives Here festival organized by the one-and-only the brilliant beautiful ✨@jazzminecarthon ✨!
The day included conversations with fellow model activists @veronicapomee & @cameronrussell joined by the wonderful Camille Tagle of @fab_scrap , @dominiquedrakeford of @compost_cotton_cornrows , stylists @bybrowniebrown & @isaiahdorty AND climate justice organizer @nyiesha_mallett (who was an Uprose youth organizer eight years ago when we joined forces to put on a sustainable fashion show at the Climate Justice Youth Summit!)
@jazzminecarthon and @sunsetjavi built out an incredible program that had everything from mending workshops, runway shows, panel conversations, to music and food.
For all the ways we critique the industry’s extractive methods, we lift up and love up all the ways fashion is first and foremost culture. We know that when we reclaim our culture we reclaim our tools for joy and care, our knowledge of how to survive and thrive 🌻

We started this group the first time Trump was elected and we’re devastated to be back here. In destabilizing times we know community is more important than ever. Growing and stretching to include as many as we can, extending kindness and preparing to show up for one another in the hard times ahead, please mark your calendars for a model mafia gathering the evening of November 15th (next Friday) 5-8pm in lower manhattan (address when you RSVP to [email protected]).
Our aim for the evening will be:
1. community care. Come have dinner together. Let us shower one another in treats and hugs and friends new and old. Sit together away from the storm.
2. Planning & resource sharing. As best we can, how to prepare for possible mass deportations, abortion bans, and the continued fights for humanity
3. Email us directly if there’s anything you think belongs in this evening, or if you have an offering you’d like to share with the group

Since its founding, Model Mafia has been dedicated to investing in model leadership and affirming the skill, opportunity, and inventive work fashion models do from in front of and behind the camera in building culture. We know that with our collective power we can take powerful climate action, particularly through strategic communication and raising the ambition inside our industry we can help make the world just and sustainable.
From showing up at marches and rallies to the #SupplyChange anti-deforestation campaign, organizing clothing swaps, book groups, and film screenings, to fundraising for frontline communities pushing back against climate chaos, we gather to celebrate organizing in unlikely spaces and support each other’s visions for a more caring present and future.
