‘What will your next thought be?’
This book of mine has been shortlisted for the Australia and New Zealand @photocollective photobook of the year 2026.
…and if you’re in Melbourne on 21st AND 22nd all the shortlisted books will be at the @melphotobookfair !!
Printed by @markmohell
Bound by Joy Tonkin @joy.tonkin.7
“What Will Your Next Thought Be?” is an exploration of a type of meditation technique used to unclutter the mind. Focus is placed on your breath and whilst doing that you ask yourself, ‘what will my next thought be?’. The result is your mind that goes blank. (Mine did 😊)
The central theme of this work revolves around that idea and its aim to achieve mental stillness, clarity and respite in today’s often overwhelming world.
The object I chose to focus on was a piece of blank A4 office paper and photographing that piece of white paper on a white background. Technically difficult to do and to print. So whilst thinking technically I’m not thinking emotionally.
I love that the result looks like there’s nothing in the book until you look closely and I hope that to the viewer it is meditative also….as it seemingly has no end when bound as a concertina.

Had a bit of a surreal weekend and I think it’s still sinking in but I am appreciative of being selected as the winner of this year’s National Photographic Portrait Prize with this portrait of Ruby. I’m back after taking the long way home from @portraitau along the coast and easing into regular life.
Big thanks to @tamaradean , @what.joanna.looks.at and @dboetkers for sifting through over 2300 works and narrowing it down to just 47 finalists. I spent a good amount of time with the show and it’s a really strong cohesive selection covering a wide breadth of portraiture. If you find yourself ACT way, it’s well worth a visit.
Prizes and art are a strange thing, and while they’re the furthest thing from my mind when I’m in the studio and not at all why I make work, it’s pretty nice to get this acknowledgment of practice.
@champion__ruby you’re amazing. Thank you for making this work with me.
A huge shoutout to Tim for the years we’ve worked together. It’s great to have people in your corner that speak your language @thirdsfineartprinting
Also thanks @__taniarahman for so much including sitting with me looking through proofs and helping my non linear thought sound somewhat coherent.
‘I’ve always struggled with the size of my body from being extremely underweight to now being overweight. Over the past few years working with other photographers, making portraits, I've been processing my feelings about the transformation and how my body fits within society. I've begun to reclaim my skin, by designing symbols about my life so far that I’ve been getting tattooed. I’m starting to feel more at home in my big queer body.’
This portrait of Ruby is half of a stereoscopic pair from the ongoing project Vantages.

Thanks @markmohell for the snaps.
P.S. how good is that headline?
Residence Reflections
Grateful to have spent a week learning from the master, Mark Mohell at the NPG @portraitau . He is a walking encyclopaedia for all things photography, an amazing artist and a great mate to hang with. I often felt like a little kid with a toy camera as I followed him around and listened to him talk photography. Thanks Mark for an incredible week.
Also grateful to have a portrait taken by Mark as well. And thanks for the first shot, Jane.

Thank you to Amy for this recent review of my latest photography masterclass. It brings me joy to serve the photography industry that gave me so much as I was coming through the ranks desperate to become better at my craft. I think this year has to be the year I bring more workshops to photographers, I’m really feeling you guys need it this year. For a long time photo and creative conferences have been cancelled and the ones that were around in the past were always outside of the ACT, why can’t I be the one to change that!?
More workshops, more group learning, more networking in the photography community - let’s do it!! 🙌.
Give me a 👍 if you are up for more face to face learning this year ???
