I shall be playing with Robyn Hitchcock in California this month and opening two of the shows in Los Angeles with a wonderful band at Zebulon on May 19 and The Venice West on May 20. Psyched to get out there.

This is a cover of The Soft Boys “You’ll Have To Go Sideways” originally recorded in 1979 for their classic LP “Underwater Moonlight” and written by Robyn Hitchcock and Kimberley Rew. It sits in the Side B, Track 2 position.
This new arrangement was recorded in the Fetzicon Lounge by me and my rhythmic partner @jon_radford_drums . And then mixed by my sonic-wizard neighbor Jeremy Ferguson at his @battletapes studio. The song is a hypnotic exercise in playing a cyclical guitar line in 7/8 time for 3 minutes while its world changes and evolves around it. There’s something comforting about that. This tune has so many musical elements I love… surfy twangy guitars, a late-70s post-punk groove, synth drones, and touches of 1960s psychedelia.
I’ve been doing a lot of collaborating with Robyn in the music and art world this year and this Thursday night I’m opening up for him at @thebasementeast and then also playing in his band. We’ll also be touring in California this May. See ya there!

Thank you to @vinyltapnashville for a wonderful Record Store Day! It was a blast playing these “Fetzicon Lounge” album tunes to a packed room with my absurdly talented friends with impromptu vocals from Patrick Sansone and Phillip Creamer and a mostly unrehearsed, but smokin’ band!
We are so lucky to have the community and creative superpowers we have in this town. This is my driving factor for why I want to make and release music again… it’s just such a blast.

I was never in band in high school so therefore I never attended band-camp, but they did make an exception for me as I was brought in as a guitarist for “Jazz Band” my senior year. And yes, I played Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon” with a Stratocaster + Wah pedal through my Marshall half-stack. Pretty much still my same vibe…
