This is a cover of The Soft Boys “You’ll Have To Go Sideways” originally recorded in 1979 for their classic LP “Underwater Moonlight” and written by Robyn Hitchcock and Kimberley Rew. It sits in the Side B, Track 2 position. This new arrangement was recorded in the Fetzicon Lounge by me and my rhythmic partner @jon_radford_drums . And then mixed by my sonic-wizard neighbor Jeremy Ferguson at his @battletapes studio. The song is a hypnotic exercise in playing a cyclical guitar line in 7/8 time for 3 minutes while its world changes and evolves around it. There’s something comforting about that. This tune has so many musical elements I love… surfy twangy guitars, a late-70s post-punk groove, synth drones, and touches of 1960s psychedelia. I’ve been doing a lot of collaborating with Robyn in the music and art world this year and this Thursday night I’m opening up for him at @thebasementeast and then also playing in his band. Attachment Theory is about relationships — but more specifically, about patterns. Why we stay. Why we leave. Why we keep ending up in the same dynamics, even when we swear we won’t. I’ve always been fascinated by relationship psychology, and this record came out of living it in real time. Heartbreak, self-reflection, dating apps, emotional unavailability... writing these songs helped me make sense of what was happening while I was in it. And because the song is never the whole story, I made a podcast to go with it. Attachment Theory: The Podcast launches January 14, and each episode is built around a song from the record — not about the music itself, but about the relationship experience and attachment patterns behind it. 2025 was a crazy week. So much work, I can barely remember who I saw. Thanks to all who had me participate, it means a lot. Got real dialed in and will hit 2026 running, hopeful for us all. Look forward to pulling out some new tricks.
