The Whole Bloody History of Vampiric Black Metal. Since the dawn of civilization, people have told each other stories about vampires. Tales of blood-drinking revenants and undead demons trace their roots to the earliest cultures of Mesopotamia, and they recur in practically every subsequent folkloric tradition. Of course, new offshoots of the vampire mythos have been popping up ever since, each with its own set of rules, tropes, and aesthetics. One of the most enduring permutations is the black metal vampire, a shadowy figure that, much like the vampire precursors of Mesopotamia, dates to the genre’s primordial origins. Wesenyeleh Mebreku is a respected educator from Addis Ababa with a profound resolve to preserve Ethiopian music and culture. It was this impulse that inspired him to record the fascinating Resonance of Time (የጊዜ ቃና). First released in 1986 and now reissued by Incidental Music (sister outfit to the Portland, Oregon label Tone Poem), the album is a product of accessible new technology and Ethiopia’s prevailing cassette tape culture. Mebreku used the inaugural Casio keyboard, the Casiotone CT-201, to record a fresh take on old folk songs—heritage that, in this unique way, he could help conserve.
