One of the most common questions we hear from artists and labels is: “Should we press our records on 140g or 180g vinyl?” The short (and perhaps controversial) answer: weight doesn’t determine sound quality. What’s the difference? ▶️ 140g Vinyl Industry standard weight for most records Slightly lighter and more flexible Efficient for larger production runs Great for the majority of projects ▶️180g Vinyl Thicker and heavier Often associated with “audiophile” releases Feels more substantial in hand Can be a great choice for premium packaging or collector editions What actually affects sound quality? The biggest factors in how a record sounds are: 🎛️ The mastering 💿 The lacquer cut 🏭 The plating and pressing quality A well-mastered record on 140g vinyl can, and often does, sound just as incredible as one on 180g. Yesterday, we had a great time touring the @paramountpressing plant here in Denver. What a cool operation run by outstanding humans. Learned so much about the vinyl pressing process and goofed off with the buddies. Thanks to the staff at Paramount for the tour and @heady_wax_fiends for organizing. ⚡️⚡️⚡️

What Actually Happens Before a Vinyl Record Gets Pressed? A lot of people think vinyl production starts at the press. It doesn’t. Before a record ever touches a puck of vinyl, there’s an entire precision-driven process that determines how it will sound forever. At Paramount Pressing & Plating, it starts with: 🔹 Mastering for Vinyl – Digital masters don’t automatically translate well to wax. Low end, sibilance, and stereo width all need to be carefully managed. 🔹 Lacquer Cutting – This is where audio becomes physical. A cutting engineer carves your music into a lacquer disc in real time. There are no “undo” buttons. 🔹 Plating – The lacquer is silvered and electroformed to create metal parts (father, mother, stampers). This step determines consistency, longevity, and detail retention in your press run. * This is where the magic of @garysalstrom comes in! 🔹 Test Pressings – Before full production, you get to hear the physical result and approve it. By the time your record hits the press, the sound has already been shaped by craftsmanship, physics, and years of experience. Are stickers on vinyl record packaging 🤩 or 🙅‍♂️ ? We spend a lot of time thinking about this working in vinyl manufacturing... When you see a hype sticker on a jacket — “1000 copy Limited Edition” “Pressed on 180g audiophile vinyl” “Exclusive color variant” “First pressing” Does it: A) Make the record feel more official and premium? B) Help drive purchase decisions in-store or online? C) Add perceived value and urgency? D) Feel unnecessary (or worse… cluttered)? From what we’ve seen, stickers can do a few powerful things: - Clarify key selling points quickly - Signal collectibility - Help indie artists stand out in a crowded retail bin - Create a psychological “this is special” moment ...But we’ve also seen: - Crowded Artwork - Redundant info already printed on the jacket - Confusion about sticker placement - Extra cost without measurable lift Collectors sometimes love them! Design purists sometimes hate them. Retail teams often appreciate the quick callouts. What’s your take? If you’re an artist, label, retailer, or collector: Do hype stickers actually boost sales? Do they make a release feel more legitimate? ...Or are they an unnecessary line item in the budget?
