Give it up for the East, which continues to hit it out of the park with its spate of world class cultural destinations, culminating with the opening of @vam_east last week. So, a massive welcome to the V&A East Museum who joins neighbours @sadlerswells_east , BBC Music Studios, the aquatics centre and the @lcflondon_ . Considering the reincarnation of this area began as Westfield (the 7th circle of hell), we’ve come a heck of a long way. And the focus of the new museum is unmistakably place-based in East London. They collaborated with young creatives and those living & working in the area. Visit ‘Why we make’ with objects spanning art, design and fashion. Outfits by Goddard, Westwood, Bowery will steal your heart. And eyes peeled for the 2023 Walthamstow FC shirt by @woodstreetwalls , pictured above, using a print by William Morris’ first apprentice 👕 There are 5 floors. At the top there is also a great roof terrace and a photography exhibit which ironically looks at all the amazing old businesses displaced when the @queenelizabetholympicpark was opened. More than 300. And everyone’s very excited about the opening of @cookinboots new @cafejikoni - a kitchen without borders. V&A East’s Youth Collective, a group of 16–24-year-olds from Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest, were consulted. An open kitchen and terrace overlooks Thomas J Price’s bronze sculpture, A Place Beyond and the. Waterworks River. The menu is exciting and diverse, offering tasty curry and broth... a word or waning: it was full when I went on a Saturday afternoon! I’ll be back to eat and for their ticketed exhibition The Music is Black 🎶 Free to visit daily 10-6pm with 10pm lates on Thursdays and Sundays. Welcome to the fairy woodlands, where the wild things live... 🧚🏼‍♀️ 🌱 I make no secret of the fact that @coleppingforest is a favourite Sunday jaunt for our household. But did you know that these 8,000 acres of ancient woods and pasture have many hidden secrets? Hop on the Suffragette line from Walthamstow Queen’s Road to Wanstead Park station. Grab a coffee from Forest Coffee, walk across the Flats and you will then find the magical Chalet Wood. At this time of year, the woods are covered with a carpet of blue as the bluebells show their pretty faces. Other mystical spots in the park include the lakes, the ruined Glade, and the historic Temple, which will be open from 11am to 3pm this weekend. Less mystical spots include the cafe which does an excellent Mr Whippy 🍦 In addition, on Saturday 25 April at 2pm, join a history expert for a guided walk around Wanstead Park. Or join a Little Saplings pre-school spring special at 12pm on Sunday 26 April. Bring your little ones to enjoy a spring story and a craft activity. Tickets are free and available for both days are on Eventbrite. All visitors are asked to please, pleaseeee respect our important native bluebells. Sunday service on the @blackhorsebeermile 🍻 ⛪️ Yep, @hackneychurchbrewco have opened a brand-new brewery and taproom, and we went down on Friday night to check it out. Retaining the spirit of their restaurant in Hackney, it’s a dog-friendly, kid-friendly local spot for hanging out with friends 🐕 There’s no kitchen on site, but they’ll be teaming up with some great food truck pop-ups and deliveries this summer. First up, @proudmarypizzeria , serving up some of the best pizzas around 🍕 Open Fridays and Saturdays until 1am, making it the perfect spot for after-work drinks that can easily turn into a full evening out. Sundays are more family-focused, with activities including a bouncy castle, mouse hunt, and retro games 🎲 They also run a weekly Wednesday quiz, £3.50 pints on Thursdays (yes, you heard that correctly), and will be introducing brewery tours alongside bookings for private events. We all know, London life never stops. Between commuting, doing the laundry, seeing friends, getting down to the gym, cleaning the house... it can sometimes feel like being on a hamster wheel. So the news that two E17 locals, Aussie’s Jody and Will, were thinking of opening a new space to unwind in @walthamstow_village , was very welcome new indeed. @arvo.sauna is a simple concept. A warm, inviting space that leaves you feeling lighter than when you arrived. No notifications. No pressure. No crowds. Just warmth, water, and social connection 💦 Hot and cold therapy has taken off in London (much to the amusement of a dear Finnish friend - they are rather more advanced in this area). And it’s hardly surprising that something that helps us feel more at ease in the middle of the chaos of city living, has been such a hit 🌡️ Taking over the former @arteepasta_ warehouse on Shernhall Street, you can now exhale and find your own pace between hot and cold. There are two traditional dry heat Finnish saunas and two ice bath plunges at 9 and 5 degrees. One sauna is social for chatting with friends & meeting your neighbours and one is silent. Each seats up to 12 people. And a third plunge of 2 degrees is on the way for those who dare... 🥶 Excitingly in summer they will also launch a studio. This will be home to extended contrast therapy sessions, breathwork, yoga, and small group workshops. Very occasionally we leave Walthamstow to potter around our great neighbouring hoods. Last weekend we met friends on Stoke Newington’s Church Street, so I’ve pulled together a guide to the area 🌿 First stop: Breakfast E17’s sister spot, @thegoodegg_ for shakshuka and long brunches, or Rasa — bright pink, deeply comforting, and entirely vegetarian. Then the shops… Independent, charming & dangerous for your bank account. Romanticise your life with a visit to Church Street Book Shop (you will leave with more than one book) and a bunch of @flowersn16 💐 ☕️ For clothes and other pieces try @arraystorelondon , @knowandlovelondon and @nookshop_uk , plus @retrohub16 for antiques. There are also several great charity shops. Tucked away in @walthamstow_village is an intimate new little movement studio, that’s the passion project of local resident, Mischa. Home and garden studios are on the rise in Waltham Forest, and I shared a post earlier this year listing some of my favourites, ranging from reflexology with @rowanandoakreflexology_e17 , to calisthenics at @sola.london , to @theunderdoggym ’s PT + gym to name just a few. @theyogashede17 is the latest movement space to join the family. Its mission is to create a small, nurturing space where people can slow down, reconnect, and feel held. Rooted in community and holistic wellbeing, they share and encourage accessible practices to support healing, release and deep self awareness. Honouring each persons journey exactly as it is 🧘‍♀️ I went along on a Friday lunchtime to take part in a class, with two others. Currently there are just three in each class, which makes it very special, but the studio can fit up to six. Mats and props are included so there’s no need to lug everything around with you, which is nice. It’s been a long, wet winter, but some slightyyy warmer weather is finally on the horizon. Get yourself a coffee and a pastry from the Engine Room and enjoy perusing their beautiful shop before heading off to explore the miles of open wetland reserve. @londonwildlifetrust also host a whole range of workshops and activities from star gazing to animal “still” life drawing and exhibitions 🖼️ @queensroadcemetery : Hanging out in a cemetery might not immediately strike you as the most charming idea, but this beautiful space is well set out and always a great place for spotting wildlife and flowers ⛪️ The sensory Morris Garden in @folpe17 : A beautiful space in the park full of unusual and interesting plants. Sit yourself down on one of the green benches and watch the world go by. Ps. You can sometimes catch herbologist guides tours 🌳 The canals: No better way to spend a Spring day than a wander down East London’s canals IMO. Grab a coffee from @pavilion_bakery in the @argallwayleyton and say hello to the ducks and fellow walkers. @hollow_ponds_ : Wander from Wood Street through upper Walthamstow and you’ll soon hit @st_peter_in_the_forest which is excellent for bluebell hunters! And then on to Hollow Ponds - the start of the ancient @eppingforestht 🦢 St James Park slowly returns to life at this time of year. It’s so nice to hear the playground being used again and remember to stop by the cute Essex Road pocket park just outside too 🛝 @walthamstow_village : Never prettier than covered in blossom and budding magnolia trees, a Sunday mooch around the Village, stopping for a pint at @instanags and snacks at @eat17stores 🌸 @stmaryswalthamstow churchyard is another lovely space to take 5 in. Adele’s hometown, Tottenham, is just across the canal and there’s plenty of fab stuff to explore on #neighbourhoodwatch 👀 7 top pubs to name check here are @thebluecoatspub , @highcrosslondon and @beehiven17 in North Tottenham, @ferryboatinntottenham (opposite the @walthamstowwetlands entrance and currently being done up), @truecraftlondon , @thepalm.n15 and North London’s first community pub - the fab @antwerparmsn17 🍻 If breweries are more your thing then @beavertownbeer and @pressuredropbrw , @redemptionbrewing & @motherkellys_n17 tap room are all local.
