IWOYI: WITHIN THE ECHO (2024) extremelyyy gassed to finally share that our first ever foray into film has landed and @tayo.rap + @rohanayinde  OVER-delivereddd! in collaboration with @touching_bass , they present their debut collaborative work 'iwoyi: within the echo'. a five-channel film and sound installation taking us on a non-linear, afro-surrealist journey into the black radical imagination and between the past, present + into a reimagined future of music’s transformative potential. here, it centres reparation, an appreciation of rest/slowness + the ability for art to construct alternative realities. commissioned by dr @leemagray as part of 'beyond the bassline: 500 years of black british music' (26 april – 26 aug.) at the @britishlibrary ; the first major exhibition to dive into the deep, musical history of african + caribbean people in britain. immersive surround sound is provided in partnership with world renowned loudspeaker manufacturer, @danleysoundlabs . the central screen becomes the nucleus of attention, placed on the ceiling and inviting viewers to lie beneath it, embracing rest. as a black man growing up in endz, to say that this is an honour falls remarkably short of anything i can articulate rn. tayo + rohan, what can i say? you have nourished the seed of those early conversations into the most imaginative, multi-layered spaceship of thoughts that we could ever fathom. as artists, i have seen you push yourselves beyond your comfort zones in the most graceful way time and time again. it goes without saying that something that’s taken almost a year to make could not have been possible without the support, intention and care of A LOT of people — full credits via iwoyi.space. i'd like to particularly thank @aseltambay for her patience and creativity + the film's composer, @melozed , whose artistry never fails to astound me. he just unlocked a new level in sonic world-building with help from @codatocodaldn , ad-i and so many more. this project marks tb’s debut exploration of the film/art installation mediums. a development on previous work with the likes of white cube (frieze), lisson gallery + jenn nkiru. come, live in it <3 link inna bio.

nineteen years ago—almost to the day—musical icon and spiritual leader alice coltrane turiyasangitananda left this earth. it's been nine years since i had the honour of helping to usher in a landmark celebration of her life, music and spiritual legacy. presented at @lsostlukes (in collaboration with the @barbican ), the event took direct inspiration from the ashram alice founded in the early 1980s: a multi-generational, multi-ethnic community that welcomed outsiders every sunday to participate in shared spiritual practice through song. music rooted in the gospel traditions of the detroit churches of her youth and interwoven with the indian devotional forms of her later spiritual practice. the evening was further contextualised by ashram, the 33-minute film by vincent moon (@petites___planetes ) and priscilla telmon, who were invited to create a contemporaneous portrait of the sai anantam ashram community. the film documents the warmth and openness of this spiritual collective, featuring conversations with community elders and alice coltrane’s sister, the singer marilyn mcleod. originally available only through her ashram, this body of work remains alice coltrane’s most obscure—and perhaps most profound—musical expression. it was released to a wider audience for the first time via @luakabop ’s 'world spirituality classics 1: the ecstatic music of alice coltrane'. although the sai anantam ashram ceased to exist as a physical site at the end of 2017, and its buildings were tragically destroyed in the california wildfires of november 2018, its spirit endures. om. alice coltrane scan lovingly provided by @studio___sula ; taken from 'monument eternal'

in late october, guided by the @m.othership_ — we gathered, we listened, we laughed, we danced, we cried, we theorised, we eulogised, we took heed and we advised; all in the memory of d'angelo. what a pleasure to share orbit with so many inquisitive and open minds inc. but not limited to: @lynettesaid , kodwo eshun (@the_otolith_group ), @mslaurynhill , @saulwilliams , @oneheartmedicine , @danieloduntan and queen pilot herself, @jennnkiru . + @common , who i was blessed to spontaneously ponder with/interview about: the d'angelo-dilla bond (two messiahs of time born four days apart by no cosmic coincidence), mortal/figurative/rhythmical time, timelessness and dilla's appreciation for 'the matrix' among other tings. for him to bare himself so candidly and graciously at such a fragile time is something that i/we will never forgot. big up @callisinwondergram and @masonfifth for opening up this forum with such grace. 🔊: @friendlypressure 📸: @lola.ogunbiyi
