@makesouthwest@camp_membership Flowstate artist talks this Saturday
my Rights of a Tree banner references debate around rights for more than human inhabitants of the natural world, where questions such as 'Should trees have standing?', Could nature have rights?', 'Who would speak for these natural entities?' 'because until the right less thing receives its rights, we cannot see it as anything but for the use of 'us'- those who are holding rights at the time
Extraction of natural resources and destruction of landscapes is not only a problem for nature, but for the whole ecosystem as the balance of the natural world is thrown off kilter and wars are waged using natural resources as a weapon to withhold or undermine functioning of social structures.

Flow State is the first show in the new upstairs gallery at Make SouthWest
curated by Flora Pearson @makesouthwest , Flow State is defined in the work of psychologists Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Jeanne Nakara as a condition of complete absorption in an activity- where time feels suspended, self awareness dissolves and action becomes instinctive
I have been absorbed for the past weeks making a banner declaring the Rights of a Tree, looking at human activity from a more than human perspective. This came out of a wild camping trip on Dartmoor on one of the hottest days last August and later on at Folk East festival hearing Robert Macfarlane's talk on Is a River Alive?
I am delighted to be in the company of 12 artists selected for Flow State

A dog for New Year ... dog sitting Moby while youngest is traversing Mauritania. Enjoying bonus walks with daytime moon up at Wistmans Woods, long shadows from the low winter sun, mossy lush branches by the river Plym, golden late afternoon light...

Had a lovely Christmas day walk on the moors with my family - Had a wonderful time but was pretty darn chilly!
Walked to a neolithic (?) Stone circle & saw lots of strange and unusual animal tracks.

The river Plym is alive
So many different types of water in one body as the water works its way round, over, between the obstacles in its way smoothing and shaping a coexistence with its landscape ....

2 @janejoblingsculptor with Fragile Home
3 @studiosarahbennett work feeling- I love when you discover a work in show you missed first time round. This piece made of pattern pieces of a glove pinned into a delicate feathery mask speaks to Torrington's historic industry of glove making
4 you have to love a man with a battenburg cake under his arm. From Sandfords bakery on Potacre st- it is all eaten now & was truly scrumptious!
