Andy Wiener's technique sees his photographic subjects wearing a 'photographic mask', often of his own face, of dolls, or other people. Photography is about capturing a moment in time, and the mask complicates our understanding of these moments by creating a mixed picture of the past and present. His artistic series, also a publication, Visitation Scenes, perfectly blends together images of his family, of nostalgic landscapes, and memory. 'These images reminds us how common it is to be displaced, of the fragility of time and place, and the transient nature of life.' (Andy Wiener) See his exhibition on at our gallery until 20 June. All artworks for sale.

So nice to see Eunice and Naomi at my exhibition in Edinbugh and spend the evening with them. Their big sister Sharon posed for the masks in 'Religeous Scenes' seen in the background. So sad that Sharon is no longer with us. We miss her badly. RIP Sharon Lancaster ❤️

It's weird, isn't it? You're so eager to share your work on Instagram that you end up posting something that, 4 months later, you're not too fond of. I'm revisiting my Spirit Scenes series and decided to swap out an image from my Durness Beach photoshoot. Here's the new one, alongside the old one for comparison. When I first took these photos, projecting images of my face onto landscapes that held meaning to me, I aimed to convey a sense that a trace of me remained in these special places. However, looking back, the approach might have been too subtle, so I've chosen a photo with a clearer view of my face. More presence, but hopefully still some mystery. Perhaps waiting 4 months before posting new work is the way forward?

@andy_wiener - Projection, Loch Morlich, Cairngorms, Scotland & Projection, Birks of Aberfeldy, Scotland Andy Wiener grew up in Edinburgh. In the mid-80s, he studied photography at the Royal College of Art, working in the staged photography genre. His work has been published and exhibited widely, including at the V&A, where a body of work is part of their collection. In 2025, he was part of a large group show at the Dalkeith Palace in Edinburgh. Dewis Lewis has published two monographs of his work. He is a qualified doctor, having graduated in medicine from the University of Edinburgh, specialising in psychiatry. In both his psychiatric and photographic practice, he is exploring the unconscious. At dusk, Wiener projected images of himself as a baby and a young boy into the landscape. These projections are interventions into the landscape and draw on the folklore of Land Spirits, where spirits inhabit the land. He is thinking about the fragile nature of memory, and whether we as humans leave any impression behind in the landscapes we wander through. These are places he feels his spirit lives; places that hold an emotional connection for him from his childhood.
