@voguemagazine recently interviewed landscape architect Marissa Angell, founder of ALA (@angell_landscape ) for an article on moss's role as an engine of inspiration across the worlds of art, design, and fashion. Speaking with writer Anna Grace Lee on moss' ubiquitous appeal, Angell notes “Moss is a plant that just takes a long time to mature and spread, so the use of that plant encourages us to reflect on any and all kinds of existential quandaries that we have as humans...[It] adds this layer of mystery [and] gives this patina of time, where there isn’t one.” Angell's reverence for natural materials extends past moss and can be found throughout her practice—which, at its core, strives to "work with nature, instead of trying to overly shape or control it." With Rowdy Meadow, a reimagining of 150 acres of former orchards east of Cleveland, Ohio, @reedhilderbrand imagined an ecologically minded environment that could also serve as the backdrop for a world-class collection of contemporary sculpture. As recently covered by @sage.journal , the result is a dynamic and diverse landscape featuring a wide network of trails taking visitors on sculpture walks through renewed ecological systems. In their creation of this sculpture park (designed in concert with a private residence by @peterpennoyerarchitects ), Reed Hilderbrand designed with an eye toward longevity and sustained stewardship, ensuring the landscape will continue to evolve—as will the ongoing conversation between the artworks and surrounding ecology.

Amagansett Pool House by @robertyoungarchitects Featured in @archdigest . This project makes use of a trellised pergola to maximize the impact of this indoor-outdoor space. In conversation with writer Elizabeth Stamp, Robert Young reflects on the relationship between planting and pergola design: “’A pergola is a living structure as much as it is an architectural one,’ Young says. ‘The spacing and structural armature need to align with the growth habit of the vine. Some species drape heavily, creating a lush ceiling effect, while others grow more upright and require tighter spacing to achieve meaningful shade. Many flowering vines drop blossoms or leaves seasonally, so it’s best to avoid placing anything overly delicate or high-maintenance directly beneath.’” Photo: Frank Oudeman

Reclaimed earth shapes a series of gentle slopes and pathways at Richmond Highlands Park, reimagining the neighborhood park as a landscape of movement, play, and sensory experience. Designed by @mithun_design , the park unfolds as a continuous loop—connecting a range of play environments while creating a fully accessible terrain for exploration. Anchoring the park, a sensory garden draws from native flora and the poetic movement of wind-drifted maple seeds, blending engagement and curiosity with moments of quiet retreat. Discrete outdoor “rooms,” layered textures, and shifting patterns of light and shade invite variation in play, offering opportunities to gather and ground while framed in a landscape of mature, native Pacific Northwest trees. The progressive design-build team of @forma_cc and Mithun, along with @KPFF_sea , is providing integrated park design and construction for eight public parks in Shoreline, Washington. Six parks, including Richmond Highlands Park, feature elements specifically designed for inclusive and neurodiverse play. Photo: Meghan Montgomery /@builtworkphotography

Gowanus Lowlands Masterplan by @scape_studio is a community-based vision for a restored public realm centered on Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal. Shaped over centuries as a working industrial waterway and long designated as an EPA Superfund site, the canal is entering a period of ecological and civic transformation. Developed over years in collaboration with @gowanuscanalconservancy and @nycplanning alongside SCAPE, Gowanus is beginning to take shape through three new public landscapes: Carroll Street Eco Basin, Huntington Tidal Terrace, and Sackett Community Hub, all designed by SCAPE—marking a new generation of waterfront public space in New York City. Reimagined by @reedhilderbrand , the new @nycparks Theodore Roosevelt Park on New York's Upper West Side expands upon its original 19th century design to create a dynamic entrance for the @amnh Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation, designed by @studiogang . Carefully calibrated to align with the surrounding urban context, Reed Hilderbrand's design meets the needs of city life while preserving the Romantic aesthetic of Calvert Vaux's original 1885 landscape design (slide 2), as well as the site's mature canopy of trees. For the cover of @architecturalrecord September 2023 issue, former sfchron urban-design critic John King details the thoughtful relocation of @aiasf + @centerarchdesignsf by @aidlindarlingdesign . In moving to the storefront of the historic Hallidie Building, the AIA San Francisco and the Center for Architecture + Design gained new public visibility, allowing them to profoundly extrovert and extend their organizations’ reach. Partnering with both non-profits, the design team created an expanded program that includes a public café, bookstore, gallery, and lecture hall, in addition to the organization’s offices and meeting rooms. The space is a cultural center focused on community outreach with programs to educate the city’s youth and general public about the power of design across all mediums. Upon the opening of the new space, King wrote: "The key to the center’s success will be the extent to which AIASF becomes a starting point to explore the intersection of design and urban life, through thought-provoking exhibitions or panels on issues such as housing, the public realm, and changing notions of sustainability. This is particularly true in a city where the dual impact of the pandemic and evolving work patterns has skeptics questioning downtown’s viability. None of that is easy. But with its visibility and nimble design, the chapter’s new home is a promising start." Photo: Richard Barnes

In “Housing U.S.A.,” a feature in the January/February issue of @archpaper exploring housing realities across America, writer Anjulie Rao (@anjulieeee ) spoke with @ccyarchitects Partner Maura Trumble about the complexities of workforce housing in Mountain West communities. Through a conversation about VooDoo Lounge—the firm’s 27-unit mixed-use housing development in Telluride—Trumble describes the care and coordination required to responsibly introduce this typology within the town’s historic core. Designed with the needs of essential workers in mind, it offers indoor/outdoor living, stunning mountain views, and community-driven spaces for those who keep this vibrant mountain town thriving year-round. The project's strategic location and design support the town’s master planning goals by promoting pedestrian traffic, fostering social interaction, and ensuring year-round residential use in the commercial core. Aesthetically, its material palette of brick, concrete, and wood references Telluride’s architectural heritage. As Rao writes, "Named after the artists studios that once inhabited the site, VooDoo avoids the extruded box typical of multifamily developments. Instead, the designers prioritized adhering to the neighborhoods existing low-rise character by spreading units across three floors...CCY employed repetitive roof gables as a nod to surrounding historic buildings." @snowkreilich 's design for the North End Community Center in Minneapolis - St. Paul, Minnesota, as featured in @archrecordmag . Located in one of the fastest growing and most culturally diverse communities in the city, this light-filled community center features new recreation and fitness spaces, a communal kitchen in addition to an open-air central courtyard accessible from the street. Creating a place of connection and sanctuary for North End's cultural mix was at the heart of the building's design. Founding Principal of Snow Kreilich, Julie Snow, notes "this representation of the community confers an automatic sense of ownership on the space" — an important feature for a particular tumultuous time in the city's history.
