Earlier this morning, I received the heartbreaking news that Chinese landscape architect Kongjian Yu passed away yesterday in a plane crash in Brazil.
Last September, I had the privilege of traveling to China with architectural writer and publisher Ashley Simone to photograph Kongjian’s work for a forthcoming book. For two weeks, we traveled across the country with him and his team, visiting Xi’an, Shanghai, Beijing, and numerous cities and villages in between. It was, without a doubt, the most fun, fulfilling, and adventurous assignment of my career.
We traveled to new locations each and every day by plane, train, or car. Once we arrived at the parks, Kongjian, who was 60 years old, would wander around with his camera, with the energy of a 20-year-old. His enthusiasm for his work was infectious.
We lost a great human being yesterday, and his contributions to the world of landscape design will forever be remembered. I feel deeply honored to have spent as much time with him as I did, and it will be a memory I’ll cherish forever.
