Last November I took a trip down backroads from Brooklyn to North Carolina. I stopped at sites and battlefields from the Civil War along the way. The history pours out of these places. The trees hold so many memories and scars. I thought about the groups of men on both sides—meeting for battle standing side by side with their neighbors, brothers, and sons.
