I've been working on a little project lately! 💦
You may have read that we now live in what the UN calls an era of „global water bankruptcy,“ with water systems overdrawn, leading to irreversible damage.
I believe that sound has the ability to make ecological processes perceptible that often remain invisible. So in my project, what I try to do is to weave together tracks in which the element of water is somehow audibly present, along with field recordings, and voices that open up perspectives on our relationship to the earth and the more-than-human world.
My first attempt was in October, when I had the honour of playing an opening set for
@crystn.hunt.akron_music . At the end of March, I broke it down into a short listening session at
@bartibae_ , and I’m now adapting it into a 1-hour set to be played at the opening party of klima
@biennale.wien this Saturday – bridging the ceremonial presentation of the 'Declaration for the Citizen Danube' before the evening unfolds into a more danceable finale. So the set is evolving just as it’s supposed to :) (However, it’s still very much a work in progress tbh because I have not yet produced my own music.)
Colonization, destruction and wars leave lasting scars on the ecosystems. This is why I also include tracks that have Palestine at their heart – as just one example for an ongoing genocide which is inseparable from ecocide.
For now, I’m sharing snippets of the October recording and footage from Bartibae. Voices featured in the original set included Donna Haraway, Rebecca Solnit, and Maya Angelou, among others. A huge thank you to
@leahbarclay and
@allwaysnorth for their permission to also include their voices in this post. I am deeply grateful to them for their words. I will continue working on this project! In the meantime, I hope these snippets offer some insight into the process – and maybe inspire you to join us at Volkstheater on Saturday :)
