Today is the first day of Ramadan. It’s also my Mama’s birthday. And it’s the day the first pre-release galley copies of Becoming Baba were delivered. Mama and I didn’t always get along. She wanted me to be better long before I was ready to try. We fought. We hurt each other. And somehow, now, we’re closer than ever. I don’t think either of us saw that coming. But flipping through these pages with her, it’s like a literal roadmap of how much we’ve changed. This would have been impossible without @tgebremedhin & @doubledaybooks . Becoming Baba is just one of infinite Muslim stories that deserve to be told. If you want more stories like this in the world, pre-order Becoming Baba. Every copy is a vote for more honest, complicated reflections of who we are: just kids wanting to make our Mama proud.

TONIGHT on the WORLD channel. AMERICAN MUSLIMS episode 3 takes us back to the Civil War, where Mohammad Khan, an Afghan Muslim immigrant, fought for the Union. Episode 4 travels to the prairies of North Dakota, where Mary Juma and early Syrian-Lebanese Muslim homesteaders built new lives and communities - and one of the first mosques in the country. Together, these stories show Muslims not as outsiders to American history, but as people who lived it, shaped it, and left records behind. Watch American Muslims on PBS. Stream FREE on PBS.org, the PBS App, and PBS YouTube.

Mamadou Yarrow, also known as Yarrow Mamout, was born in West Africa around 1736, enslaved in America, and later gained his freedom in Georgetown, now a neighborhood of Washington, D.C. He became a property owner, a public figure, and one of the earliest known American Muslims whose portrait still survives. His story reminds us: Muslims have been part of America from the beginning. Watch American Muslims on PBS. Stream FREE on PBS.org, the PBS App, and PBS YouTube.

For centuries, Muslims have been part of American life, from enslaved African Muslims to early immigrant communities building lives across the country. This isn’t new history. It’s a fuller account of who was here, what they lived through, and how they helped shape the nation. As we approach the 250th anniversary of independance, writers and researchers like Zain Abdullah are helping bring more of America’s past into view. Watch American Muslims on PBS. Stream free on PBS.org, the PBS App, and PBS YouTube.

What do a Qur’an owned by Thomas Jefferson, the autobiography of an enslaved African man named Omar ibn Said, and a mosque built on the plains of North Dakota have in common? More than you might think. Follow Aymann Ismail as he traces the hidden history of Muslims in America, from enslaved scholars to immigrant communities building mosques. Uncover the connections that reshape how we understand the American story and who belongs within it. Watch AMERICAN MUSLIMS on the PBS app or website now.

Muslims have been part of American life since the nation’s founding. From slavery, to independance, to the Civil War, to immigration and the Great Migration, these stories are woven into the country’s history. They’re not side notes. They expand how we understand those moments. American Muslims is a six-part PBS series that brings these histories into view. Watch on PBS or stream free on @PBS . Why don’t we learn this?

My first event for Notes on Love is a culmination of things i’m excited to share. Eternally grateful to my friend, @aymanndotcom (who also wrote a great memoir, you should check it out), for having a conversation with me, hosted at @booksaremagicbk . June 1st can’t come soon enough, and the day after, when Notes is available to the world. I’m looking forward to you being there, truly. There’s a link in my bio if you wanna get tickets. I’m feeling a bunch of emotions over this event, over this book coming out, but all I can really think about is Rocky from PHM. This is amaze, amaze, amaze. #poetry #poetrycommunity #authorofinstagram
