The late Phil Donahue on the deterioration of Talk Shows and US Culture (May 2001) This interview with @televisionacademyfoundation is from May 2001 where Donahue looks back on his career in which he hosted over 6,700 episodes of the Phil Donahue Show. He also briefly hosted a talk show on MSNBC from July 2002 to February 2003 when he was fired. A leaked internal memo from MSNBC states: “He represents a difficult public face for NBC in a time of war. He seems to delight in presenting guests who are antiwar, anti-Bush and skeptical of the administration’s motives.” And that the Donahue Show was “a home for the liberal antiwar agenda at the same time that our competitors are waving the flag at every opportunity.” Donahue was one of the most influential talk show hosts and was often referred to as the “king of daytime talk”. Oprah Winfrey has said, “If it weren’t for Phil Donahue, there would never have been an Oprah Show.”

Drawing from Sophie Strand’s ecological and mythological approach to storytelling and Noor Tagouri’s work as a journalist, independent storyteller, and Self-Investigation practice, these gatherings weave together the personal and the collective, the embodied and the imagined.
