last october i was sitting on my couch with a friend when i opened up to her about something that happened years ago and how i still struggled with it.
she listened and politely said “that’s a story. you can stop living inside it.” i looked at her confused (and a little offended) and replied “i’m not making it up- it really happened”. she said “i believe you but how does investing in the past get you where you want to go?”
i must have been ready to hear this because instead of feeling triggered or angry my mind sort of cracked open and i realized that for years i’d been repeating this story. and for years nothing had changed. i wanted to do great things. but maybe those things couldn’t be accomplished with the mindset of a person trapped inside that old story. maybe those great things required space. maybe they needed a blank slate to manifest. if i was able to divorce myself from stories of the past maybe i could pull myself out of the old timeline and drop myself into a new one.
