PROJECT 101
Shimmy, shimmy, ya, shimmy ya, shimmy yo,…
I always love trying out new things, and there is nothing better than making a new show bike for myself. And so I built this super-slim, classic-style randonneur bike.
I would lie if I said I didn’t take a lot of inspiration from my framebuilding heroes like Thomas
@meerglas_frameworks ,
@jpweigle and
@chapmancycles .
At first, I wanted to make a super-classic lugged frame and fork, simply because I had not done that in a long time.
But then I thought: why not take inspiration from classic-style frames while using modern lugless TIG welding to give it a more reduced and clean, Fernet-like look?
I rifled through my workshop and found a standard size ( 1“TT, 1 1/8“ DT )
@reynoldstechnology tubeset and was smiling, since I had not had such slim tubing in my hands for a long time.
How would a bike like this perform? Then I thought: back then, every bike frame was made like that and no one complained, even more, riders back then were amazingly fast in PBP and other races.
After finding a beautiful
@reneherse fork crown and
@kaiseitubes blades, things started to fall into place, to make it a Rinko bike with classic low-trail geometry, etc
And then it all escalated: why not build a second frame with identical geometry but super thinwall oversize
@columbus_official tubing (1 1/8“ TT ; 1 1/4“ DT ) to really compare ride quality?
In the end, every thing got out of control and I made custom CNC machined 13sp 1x chainrings for ultra-low Q-factor
@specialites_ta cranks, combined
@campagnolosrl Ekar with
@growtac friction shifters and
@paulcomponent cantilevers,
@sonnabendynamo Ladelux and even a
@gramm_tourpacking top tube bag with integrated beer can holders which I had dreamed of one night. The awesome paint job done by
@orlo_cnc_frames was inspired by
@magnuswalker who once painted his Porsche 914 in neon colors...
And so this bike became the ultimate test bed for everything I always wanted to try, watch out for the results!
Huge thanks to
@tuneblackforest , SON, René Herse, Growtac, Paul Components, Campagnolo, TA Specialités, and
@velocityusa for their support!
