With Amsterdam Dance Event around the corner, we asked Al Lewis aka @bebe__bad her must go to parties and events for this year’s edition. A DJ and filmmaker in equal measure, she moves between bass-heavy UK touchstones and high-voltage club energy, stitching them together with an ear for tension and release. Her sets swing from sweat-soaked intimacy at De School to sunrise slots at Glastonbury, to community focused Freï - her party series focused on bringing FEMME+ representation to dancefloors. Off the dancefloor, Al is an award-winning documentary filmmaker for Netflix, BBC, The Guardian, Vice, and Boiler Room. Her films track activism, identity, and underground worlds with care and bite- amplifying stories that don’t always get told, and giving them the cinematic scale they deserve. Pride is Protest ~ @dazed 2020 as Amsterdam gears up for a big Pride weekend, I’ve been thinking about 2020 - lockdown, BLM, global protests, and a fog of fear and urgency. It feels distant now, but also uncomfortably familiar. we made this film in that moment with no budget and three weeks until Pride - just a desire to create connection and visibility when we needed it most. Pride is Protest profiles the Amsterdam queer community and ties Pride back to its roots in resistance and collective action. that same spirit still matters. in 2025, as we face horrific actions in Gaza, rising anti-migrant policies, attacks on trans rights, and the rolling back of hard-won freedoms, community remains our most powerful form of protest. this film only came to life because of the love and solidarity of everyone who showed up. that energy still carries us forward.
