It didn't quite feel real until today... ...but I am officially an Italian American Dual Citizen. (E anche in italiano...) "History doesn't repeat itself, but it often Rhymes..." Samuel Clemens 1835 - 1910 In 1920, John Christie, heir to the Glyndebourne Estate, inherited the house after the 1913 death of his grandfather. After some renovations, and construction of a large Organ Room in the house in 1923, he went on to host amateur (and eventually professional) opera evenings at the house. At one of these evenings, in 1931, he was introduced to Canadian opera singer, Audrey Mildmay. The two were married later that year, and honeymooned in Germany and Austria, visiting both the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, and the Salzburger Festspiele.... Then, in 1933, the Nazis took over. The Städtische Opernhaus in Berlin came under Nazi Propaganda jurisdiction in 1934, and any administration who were disloyal to the Führer were either ousted, or resigned. As staunch opponents to the Nazi regime, Intendant Carl Ebert and General Manager Rudolf Bing fled Germany and were invited by John Christie to help form The Glyndebourne Festival in 1934. The Städtische Opernhaus in Charlottenburg was renamed the Deutsches Opernhaus, headed by Propaganda Minister, Joseph Goebbels, and remained the premiere Propaganda house of the Nazi Party until it's destruction by Allied Bombing on Nov 23, 1943. After the War, Rudolf Bing, a force for progress in this world, became the General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera in 1949... A position he held for 22 years. And oversaw the transition from the Old Met to the New Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. He also famously hired the first black singers at the Metropolitan Opera, including operatic legends like Marian Anderson, Robert McFerrin, and none other than George Shirley. In 1961, the Deutsche Oper Berlin was built on the site of the formerly destroyed theater & opened with a production of Mozart's DON GIOVANNI. In light of recent events, I applaud the decision by the Washington National Opera to exeunt the 'Trump' Kennedy Center rather than associate nor collaborate with that which rhymes with the past.... "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Last week was my THIRD role debut in two months, as "Alfred" in Rolando Villazon's clever and whimsical adaptation of Strauss' DIE FLEDERMAUS at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. This production marked something really special for me, because DIE FLEDERMAUS was the very first opera I ever saw, back in Dec 2005 at the Metropolitan Opera. I was 13 years old and wore my nicest suit to the opera (and apparently 13-year-old me appeared overdressed because no less than 3 people asked me for directions to the restrooms because they thought I worked there... "I don't know ma'am / sir, I've never been here before." ) The music stuck with me. The overture to FLEDERMAUS is still, to this day, my favorite opera overture. Never in a million years would I believe that 20 years later (time is flyin' y'all) I'd get to perform that very same opera for the very first time on stage in the Capital of Germany. There are still two more performances of FLEDERMAUS at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, but, my time as Alfred has flown by... 🦇 Oh, and one more fun thing! Performance #2 had not one, not two, but THREE "Toms!" (Which was, funnily enough, the SECOND opera I ever saw, also at the Met) 🪈

Elated to have made my debut (auf Deutsch) as "The Witch" in Engelbert Humperdinck's beloved adaptation of HÄNSEL UND GRETEL this past week at the Deutsche Oper Berlin!
