Since high school, I have been obsessed with the music of Gustav Mahler. I begged my voice teacher to assign me a Mahler song. Her response was, âtheyâre too difficult, but if you can find a song in a key where you can sing all of the notes comfortably, you can work on that songâ. Mahler is notoriously rangy and very difficult especially for a teenage tenor! Unwilling to accept defeat, I transposed Liebst du um Schönheit by hand in order to sing Mahler. I sang it throughout my senior year, including on my Honors Recital. Young Patrick would be absolutely thrilled to know that not only do I get to sing #mahler (and with an orchestra!) but it has become a staple of my repertoire. Tenors, Sing ThisâŠNot That, heldentenor edition. There is no shortage of amazing auditions arias for heldentenors thanks to the 2 Richards (Strauss and Wagner). However some of the Strauss roles donât have excerptible arias OR they are fiendishly difficult for the pianists to play, and offering Wagner in auditions can be a touchy subject if you havenât yet sung any of these roles on stage. So I suggest you take a look at Paulâs aria from Die tote Stadt. Beautiful, lyrical, high lying and impactful.
