I had the pleasure of meeting LaKeith Stanfield in 2024. What stayed with me most during our conversation was his deep commitment to celebrating Black creativity and the singularity of the way he moves through Hollywood. LaKeith is one of four cover stars for issue 8 titled Shaping What’s Next, an issue that is a recognition of the people designing the future of Music, Fashion, TV, Film and Architecture. @theastergates covers Justsmile Issue 7. For two decades, the Chicago native has expanded the category of the artist, moulding and recombining raw matter in service of his people. For Gates’s cover shoot of the ‘What We Carry Forward’ Issue, the artist chose to be photographed in front of the original credenza from the Johnson Publishing Company offices in Chicago, publishers of Ebony and Jet magazines, and a sculpture by the late Chicago-born Richard Hunt, a friend of Gates’ and the first African American sculptor to be given a retrospective by MoMA. cktrl for the cover of JUSTSMILE ISSUE 7, ‘What We Carry Forward’. I couldn’t be prouder of this issue, titled ‘What We Carry Forward.’ This issue revisits ideas and stories from the past, honoring their origins while presenting them in a modernized form. Black artists in classical music have often had an under-recognized impact on the genre. In modern times, this influence isn’t as popularized as it was decades ago. I created Justsmile as a platform to highlight talent that are forging their own path and are finding ways to create without mainstream validation. British multi-instrumentalist and producer Bradley Miller, known artistically as cktrl (short for “Can’t Keep to Reality”), has, at the age of 33, carved out his space in a genre that has often kept Black artists at arm’s length. In a world consistently filled with noise, cktrl emphasizes the importance of silence to evoke feelings and expresses his freedom from playing the algorithm game. cktrl was photographed in his hometown of London by photographer Jessica Madavo.
