Updated Hours | Each week at The Land School, we continue to deepen our practice of listening through our almost-daily sonic offering, Listening Hours. This season, we’re pleased to welcome you to Listening Hours Wednesdays through Saturdays, from 12 PM to 8 PM. Evoking the ethos of the Japanese ongaku kissa and situated within the sonic resonance of Black space, our Listening Hours program invites us to gather within a shared context of space, music, and study. Each session offers an opportunity to be present and listen through select records from our in-house vinyl selection alongside our team and special guest selectors. We look forward to listening with you.

The ceramic vessel is a recurring and fundamental form in Gates’s practice. Like clothing, it is not merely utilitarian, but a receptacle for history, culture, philosophy, and the human spirit. In this exhibition, the vessel appears wrapped in textile, resembling a shifuku, bringing together traditions of craft, ritual, and care. Through attire and vessel, the body becomes a metaphor for the reweaving of a community’s culture and history through the generational histories of ceremony, craft, and ritual. HOSOO GALLERY #hosoo #TheasterGates #hosoogallery @theastergates

In 2023, researcher Nazanin Ghaffari, Ph.D, embedded into Rebuild’s ecosystem to document the evolution and culture-keeping and culture-sharping practices of our organization, an effort commissioned by the Wallace Foundation’s (@WallaceFdn ) Advancing Well-Being in the Arts initiative. Now, the Social Science Research Council (@ssrc_org ) has published new analyses that look across grantees in the Thriving Communities cohort of the initiative, uplifting the strategies we’ve developed in the face of challenges we share as community-based arts organizations. We’re excited for these findings to be shared with other funders, arts researchers, and organizations in the field, helping to build a deeper understanding of our organizations and the many ways in which we contribute to cultural stewardship and community connection. This exhibition draws from an important archive on Malcolm X compiled by journalist Ei Nagata and his partner Haruhi Ishitani, first presented in Gates’s 2025 exhibition “1965: Malcolm in Winter: A Translation Exercise” in London. After witnessing Malcolm X’s assassination on February 21, 1965, they dedicated themselves to introducing the Black Liberation Movement to Japan through translation and writing. This exhibition marks an opportunity to encounter parts of this archive in Japan for the first time. HOSOO GALLERY #hosoo #TheasterGates #hosoogallery @theastergates

THIS SUNDAY, May 17, 3 PM - 7 PM | We invite you to join us for Sunday Service with Duane Powell at The Land School, in continued ceremony and celebration of House.  The Land School’s past and future evokes the spatial histories of Chicago House, anchored in Catholic school auditoriums that provided space for young, emerging House heads to experience pure rhythmic liberation. Collectively, guided by Duane’s sonic stewardship, we’ll gather in reverence of the House community and culture, and the beloved legacy of Frankie Knuckles, whose immeasurable impact on the canon continue to resonate today. Please review our updated Sunday Service and Land School policies and RSVP via the registration link in our bio. Please note: If tickets sell out before you have the opportunity to secure yours, we will enact an on-site waitlist on a first-come, first-served basis until 4:00 PM. Entry is not guaranteed for waitlisted guests.

“Theaster Gates: Glorious Robe” presents a series of obi with the history of the Black Liberation Movement woven into them. Dedicated to the memories of the prominent Civil Rights leaders, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Medgar Evers, the sashes are emblazoned with the iconic fist emblem and the year of their murders. The obi, a traditional component of Japanese attire, serves here as a medium for collective memory and commemoration. Wednesday, May 13, 5 - 8 PM | As we continue to dive deeper into Duane Powell’s sonic curricula for his extended Listening Hours project, “1976: In Retrospect,” we invite you to join us at The Land School for the series’ next installment. For May’s first session, which serendipitously lands on Stevie’s 76th birthday, we’ll celebrate by listening through his landmark 1976 album, Songs in the Key of Life. Together, we’ll reflect on the record’s enduring resonance and the expansive sonic world that Stevie Wonder offered us during this pivotal year in Black music history. Duane Powell’s 1976: In Retrospect is an extended Listening Hours project presented as part of his residency. Through shared listening and deep musical study, the series grounds us in the prolific sounds and cultural currents of records released in 1976 as they reach their golden jubilee. RSVP via the link in our bio. Space is limited. Please note: Beginning in June, Duane’s 1976 sessions will shift to be held every second and fourth Thursday.

Last October, we were honored to host the kick off for @deemjournal ’s third annual symposium, Designing for Dignity 03: A Convening of Possibilities, at The Land School - the very site where our founder, Theaster Gates, was photographed and interviewed for the cover story of Deem’s Issue Four: A Sense of Place while still under construction. Through a shared dialogue between Gates and Deem’s co-founder Nu Goteh (@nuthervandross ), the two reflected on Gates’s artistic practice and design orientation, which ideologically guide and ground his spatial investments on Chicago’s South Side. In conversation, Gates and Goteh expanded on the breadth and boundless potentials of placemaking, the subversive radicality of Rebuild’s model, the rituals necessary for holding space, and the arc of responsibility tied into cultural service work. Watch Gates and Goteh’s full conversation now and learn more about how Rebuild’s work is a service of “balanc[ing] the anxiety of what could be taken with the joy of giving” via the link in our bio. Special thanks to the @mcachicago and @soundrotation whose sonic offerings helped give life to this convening and the resonant frequencies of Black space.

YOGA WITH APRIL FALCON | Here at Rebuild, we’re grateful for the many seasons of movement, care, and community we’ve shared throughout April Falcon’s three-year residency. Throughout her time as a creative entrepreneur-in-residence, April has collaborated with our teams to offer free weekly classes at Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative, Kenwood Gardens, and The Land School; root artistic communities in Japan and France in their somatic practices during our Black Artists Retreats; and develop a scholarship for local practitioners to attend her yoga retreat in Portugal. All of this responded to a central question: what can space and land offer our movement practices? Before April’s residency draws to a close, we hope you’ll join us for her final classes on Fridays at 7 AM and Sundays at 12:30 PM at The Land School throughout May. Thank you, April.
