Very sad to hear of the passing of my friend and mentor Doug Allan.
He was the most physically brave person I’ve ever met. Kind, tough, and completely at home in wild places.
From him I learned what this job really is - not the show, but the graft. The long days. The cold. The patience. The importance of team. Getting close to your subject. Earning acceptance. Standing your ground to get the shot when it mattered.
He made people feel safe in the field, like only true leaders can. Kids loved him. Mine certainly did.
I feel gutted. It has taken a few days to accept he is gone. I learned what it is to be a wildlife cameraman from him.
My thoughts are with Liam and his family.
Thank you, Doug @dougallancamera
🚨 PROTECT MEANS PROTECT 🚨
Right now, the UK government is still allowing industrial bottom-trawling inside Marine Protected Areas. Heavy nets are dragged across fragile seabeds—destroying coral gardens, fish nurseries and ancient carbon stores.
This isn’t protection. It’s greenwash.
Scientists, fishers, and coastal communities are calling for an immediate ban on bottom-trawling in every MPA. The evidence is clear. The government has the power. What’s missing is political will.
Every tide we wait, more life is lost.
Demand action today.

@natgeotv have just made a short reel out of scallop dredging sequence from Ocean with David Attenborough. As a filmmaker, this is the scene I feel most compelled to share – not because it’s beautiful, but because it’s necessary.
Scallop dredging quite literally scrapes the life from the seabed. 99% of UK scallops are taken this way, and right now 92% of our waters are still open to dredging and bottom trawling. Entire ecosystems are destroyed for the sake of one species. It’s legal, it’s devastating, and it has to change.
This is where storytelling meets activism. By putting these images on screen, we can’t pretend we don’t know what’s happening anymore.
It took an extraordinary team to capture this, and a special mention must go to @arran.coast – tireless custodians of Scotland’s seas, and an inspiration to everyone who cares about the ocean.

Very excited and proud of the expert team who put together tonight’s BBC1 Parenthood offering - a masterclass on underwater filming and storytelling with purpose . Telling Parenthood stories requires care and scientific vigour , but doing it underwater requires the very highest levels of professionalism. Well done @olly_scholey@maekld@stormpetrelstudios@hardus.v_wildfilm@richardshucksmith@hollytarplee@silverback_films and all the other legends that made this beautiful film . Catch it at 7.20pm or on @bbciplayer #parenthood #parenting #naturalhistory
A lifetime highlight and huge privilage being a part of the team that made this film. Now streaming on @disneyplus and @hulu . I know I’ll never work on a more important film. Everything crossed for #unoc this week. Now is the time, the hour is near….please let’s give the ocean the protection it needs.

Repost @olly_scholey “Life at its most mesmerising”.
Alongside showing the stark reality of what is happening to today’s seas, we wanted to celebrate the astonishing beauty of the Ocean, both today and throughout Attenborough’s life. Crafting this scene with an incredible team was one of the most rewarding creative experiences of my career. Filmed in one of the last coral reefs in the world that is truly wild with @papuadivingresorts . Shot by Oceans DOP @stormpetrelstudios and myself. Beautifully edited by @philippa_edwards with @tobynotown . ”Blurry David” credit goes to the legend that is @chrisharvy . With rebreather diver @maekld , and @katestreather@joewoodyear

🎞️ OCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH is in Cinemas from Tommorow!
I can’t begin to express how proud I am to have served as the Director of Underwater Photography on this film.
Working on Ocean has been, without question, the greatest privilege of my life. From the first dive to the final frame, this journey has been a profound and humbling experience—one that’s challenged me, inspired me, and left me in awe of the ocean and the life within it.
This film wouldn’t exist without the tireless dedication and extraordinary talent of a truly world-class team. I was incredibly lucky to work alongside some of the best in the business:

…and many more behind the camera, in the field, and in post.
Coming to cinemas soon.
The full film will be in cinemas from 8 May, and I genuinely hope people experience it on the biggest screen possible.
