Here’s one of my favourite shots from my youth, when I spent all my spare time in Shetland bothering otters with my camera. I took it on film and so it’s a bit ropey - but then it was 1990. I’ve always been mad in otters and now I’m proud to support the @ukwildottertrust - they’re currently running a fundraiser. Last week @naledijackson and I were hosted by @matirabushcamp - (my favourite camp in the Maasai Mara) for a few days. We spent most of our time hanging out with the local lions. I love the Mara in the off season, as the lions hunt buffalo a lot more, which sucks for the buffalo admittedly but makes the encounters always interesting.
It’s been years since I was in the Mara in the off season but it was somehow much better - quieter and more relaxed. Thanks so much @matirabushcamp@matira_magazin@braun_monika@antonytira for a wonderful stay - as always.
Renowned photographer and wildlife filmmaker Charlie Hamilton James - director of “Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story” - has joined the UK Wild Otter Trust as Honorary President.
Charlie said: “After a lifetime working with otters, it is truly an honour to be asked by Dave and the UK Wild Otter Trust to become Honorary President. In a world of negative conservation stories, otters returning to rivers across the UK is a rare success. It’s thanks to the hard work of so many people, working with both otters and rivers, over the last few decades, that has made that happen. Looking to the future, important work from organisations like UKWOT is going to be absolutely crucial to the continued protection of an animal that so many people love and that is so important to the health of our riverine and coastal ecosystems.”
