Can’t believe so much time has passed, but we were thrilled to be invited to take part in @de_studio ‘s @grafixxfest zine fest in Antwerp in November last year. We exhibited a few of our Worldplay on Paper Zines and our Lo-Fi, DIY and Alternative Publications in South Africa zines.

“It is clear, from both the experiences unpacked in these texts as well as the roundtable proceedings, that nothing meaningful can be achieved without collaboration and community.” - David Paton
@maaike00 and I (as @soft_serve_projects ) had the honour of doing the creative direction for the publication Artists’ lo-fi, DIY and Alternative Publications in South Africa. It began as a roundtable discussion at Jack Ginsberg Centre for the Book Arts last year, chaired by Prof. David Paton. David approached us to put together a printed publication and we decided to print each essay as its own Risograph zine, put together as a lucky packet.
A massive thank you to @dani.ella.creates and @bibiscreativeclub for the design, @callums.artsymess , @pagesandleaves and @doodle_noodles00 for printing and @wetink_fine_art_printing for cropping and binding. All of you went beyond what was expected.
The exhibition opening and publication launch (limited copies available) is happening this Saturday (2 Aug) from 11:00 at @now_gallery_openwindow . Link in bio for more info.

We invite you to join us for the exhibition opening and publication launch of Lo-Fi Street Cred.
The publication is a tangible outcome of the public roundtable discussions that accompanied the exhibition lo-fi street cred: artist’s zines, DIY and alternative publications held on 10 August 2024 at the Jack Ginsberg Centre for Book Arts (JGCBA), Wits Art Museum (WAM), University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).
The theme of the roundtable was What value do printed zines and DIY publications offer in a digital age? The discussants were Minenkulu Ngoyi from Alphabet Zoo; Dr. Rangoato Hlasane, Eva-Rose Lundon and Nokukhanya Sibanda from the Department of Fine Arts, Wits University; Neil Badenhorst, Musa Malobola and Ditshegofatso Maoto from the Department of Graphic Design at the University of Johannesburg; Nina Torr, Maaike Bakker, Philisiwe Memela and Callum Sutherland from Open Window, Centurion, and David Paton moderated the event.
Each discussant has contributed to the texts that are included in this publication, to which Cape Town-based artist Jonah Sack (whose works were included in the exhibition and the cover of its posterzine catalogue), as well as Victoria Wigzell (director of Johannesburg-based Pulp Paperworks), have contributed reflective writings on their communal practices.
