📣Applications are open for MA and PhD scholarship support through the #NRF South African Research Chair in South African Art and Visual Culture at the #UniversityOfJohannesburg, for studies commencing in 2027. This call is for candidates seeking NRF scholarship funding for visual arts research under the supervision of Prof Brenda Schmahmann, the SARChI Chair in South African Art and Visual Culture. Proposed research should fit broadly within one of the following research areas: • Gender and Visual Culture • Public Art, Curation and the Politics of Representation in the Public Domain • Art and Design in the Context of Community Projects. ✨The scholarships include full and partial funding options for MA and PhD study, subject to NRF eligibility criteria. Prospective applicants who meet the eligibility requirements should contact Prof Brenda Schmahmann at [email protected] for an application form. The completed application form, together with an official academic record, must be submitted to Prof Schmahmann by no later than 24 June 2026. Our Honours Industrial Design students have officially kicked off their third project for the year in collaboration with the Centre for Ecological Intelligence (CEI) at the University of Johannesburg. The project explores the role of Industrial Design within ecological systems, sustainability, food systems and community-based initiatives, with students engaging directly with real contexts, stakeholders and environments. The project began with a round-table discussion, followed by a tour of the APB Garden Site and various hands-on agricultural activities taking place on site. Over the coming weeks, students will identify areas of focus and opportunity, and develop innovative design interventions that contribute toward the strategic goals and broader impact of the Centre.
