The Reference Library at SluiceHQ at studio1.1 gallery is a collaborative resource combining the collections of Sluice and studio1.1 with donated books from friends and supporters. Its central focus is artist-led discourse, artist-led archives, and artist published editions. As the library develops, we will invite artists, writers, and curators to engage with its content and taxonomy via invitational residencies — each guest librarian will supplement the collection with personal additions as the basis for thematic inquiry.
Alongside the Reference Library, artist publications are available to buy, free samples to take away, and of course Sluice magazine is available to buy (including select back-issues).
The library is open Thursday–Sunday during exhibitions.
To donate, stock your publication, or enquire about upcoming residencies, subscribe to the Sluice e-newsletter for announcements.

CONTRARIWISE
7 – 31 May
"if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic.” Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass
Contrariwise is the first exhibition of the refreshed studio1.1 in partnership with Sluice. To mark this coming together, we're celebrating the communities that support our respective initiatives, presenting an exhibition drawn from Members (studio1.1) and Friends (Sluice).
Running artist-led projects has always required a willingness to believe in unlikely things: that spaces will survive, that conversations will continue, that artists with very different approaches but bound by a shared ethos can flourish together. Collaboration itself can feel contrary — improbable, occasionally illogical — yet it persists.
This exhibition gathers works that sit beside one another without demanding agreement. Different voices, materials, and intentions coexist here in productive tension.

Sluice and studio1.1 are proud to announce a creative partnership.
From May 2026 Sluice and studio1.1 will be partaking in a space share, both projects will deliver independent exhibition programmes split equally across the year.
Collaborative elements between projects will include a reading room / bookshop / research centre, this will allow both projects to showcase creative practices that extend beyond visual art – including writing, research, publishing and interdisciplinary work.
During the month of April the gallery will be closed for refurbishment. The reconfiguration will create the opportunity for monthly desk hire. We're also creating a bookable hot-desking slot for Sluice patrons and studio1.1 members. More info to follow.

Death, reimagined.
The Autumn 2025 issue of Sluice Magazine, guest-edited by Dr Sarah Wishart, gathers artists, writers and thinkers who treat death not as an end, but a shift or a presence rearranged. From intimate reflections to structural critiques, this issue holds space for memory, ritual and reanimation.
