I’m very pleased to be part of _CONTRARIWISE opening tomorrow, Thursday 7 May 2026, 6-9 pm at Studio 1.1, 57a Redchurch Street, Shoreditch, London, E2 7DJ 7 - 31 May “if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn’t, it ain’t. That’s logic.” Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass. Contrariwise is the first exhibition of the refreshed studio1.1 @studio1.1_london in partnership with Sluice @sluice__ To mark this coming together, we’re celebrating the communities that support our respective initiatives, presenting an exhibition drawn from Members (studio1.1) and Friends (Sluice). Running artist-led projects has always required a Willingness to believe in unlikely things: that spaces will survive, that conversations will continue, that artists with very different approaches but bound by a shared ethos can flourish together. Collaboration itself can feel contrary - improbable, occasionally illogical - yet it persists. This exhibition gathers works that sit beside one another without demanding agreement. Different voices, materials, and intentions coexist here in productive tension. Participating artists: @domingoarjonilla @julie_caves @deepa.chudasama @colecorner @jamesdearlove_art @liz_elton @gobetween_projects @donnellpatrick @ruthphilo @marion_piper @markscottwood @shawn_stipling @sharon.swaine @davidwebbpaintings @mswiftyart #contemporaryart #londonexhibitions #firstthursdays

The Icelandic Embassy in Copenhagen have reprised the exhibition “Postcards for Seyðisfjörður” an exhibition held at LungA school in Seyðisfjörður in Iceland May 2025.  It opened at Embassy of Iceland in Copenhagen Strandgade 89, DK-1401 København K, last night and runs from 18 April until 4 June 2026. The Gallery is open Monday- Friday, closed at weekends. The exhibition originally formed part of Sluice @sluice__ expo 2025 ‘Worldbuilding’ in Seyðisfjörður. It was reprised initially at the Icelandic Embassy in London in November through to December 2025. Postcards reflect cultural and interactional enactments of contemporary globalisation, the transient mementos of travel. Dieter Roth played an important role in the cultural life of Seyðisfjörður. He also painted on postcards.  H_A_R_D_P_A_I_N_T_I_N_G asked artists to obverse the once common practice of sending a postcard from a place visited. A postcard of Seyðisfjörður to Seyðisfjörður. A postcard of itself to itself but altered / adjusted / intervened by artists who may not have travelled to Seyðisfjörður before.  The image used for publicity purposes is of a Postcard by Rita Donagh. Rita’s postcard contains photographs of Richard Hamilton and Dieter Roth by Maria Gilissen Broodthaers. The date of the photographs is 1976 and they appear with the ‘autobiographies’ at the end of the catalogue entitled ‘COLLABORATIONS OF CH. ROTHAM’ copyright: richard and dieter, published 1977.  H_A_R_D_P_A_I_N_T_I_N_G are delighted that a number of other artists have taken part in this iteration of the project bringing the total number to 150. H_A_R_D_P_A_I_N_T_I_N_G are Ian Boutell, Philip Cole, Patrick O’Donnell and Stig Evans.  Images: Ruth Philo Postcard for Seyðisfjörður Invitation to exhibition Artists in the exhibition Exhibition in Copenhagen & Opening H_A_R_D_P_A_I_N_T_I_N_G - Ian Boutell, Philip Cole, Patrick O’Donnell and Stig Evans.  Opening at the Icelandic Embassy, London

Lovely to spend time and reconnect with his paintings and prints and see the exhibition and works placed in the house. ‘ I want my pictures to be things. I want them to be made up of marks that are physically and individually self-sufficient.’ Howard Hodgkin #painting #howardhodgkin
