One month left to see 'Phoebe Collings-James: a rose, a bridge, a house'.
Across Pitzhanger, sculpture, clay paintings and ceramic works unfold through texture, surface and shifting forms — from the main galleries to Sir John Soane’s historic interiors.
Featuring works from the 'Infidels' series alongside Clay Paintings, the exhibition explores clay as a living material: manipulated, marked and continually changed.
Closing 14 June.

This half-term, Pitzhanger gets a little messier.
Join us for a week of making, play and discovery inspired by the colours, patterns and materials in our current exhibitions.
Build cardboard worlds in the Rickyard with artist Lewis McVey. Shape and press clay with ceramicist Annabel Johnson. Then wander through Sir John Soane’s historic manor and two contemporary exhibitions with fresh eyes.

At first glance, they resemble paintings. Look closer and the surface begins to shift.
Phoebe Collings-James’s Clay Paintings use clay as a living material — manipulated, marked and reshaped by hand.
See them in 'Phoebe Collings-James: a rose, a bridge, a house' at Pitzhanger until 14 June.

A little bit cinematic, wouldn’t you say?

These statues at Pitzhanger Manor look like carved stone… but they’re not.
The four figures above our entrance are caryatids – standing female forms inspired by ancient Greek architecture and chosen by Sir John Soane for Pitzhanger.
They’re made of Coade stone, a remarkable 18th-century material developed by Eleanor Coade, one of Georgian Britain’s most extraordinary businesswomen. Despite the name, it wasn’t really stone at all, but a highly durable ceramic-like material fired at extremely high temperatures.
More than 200 years later, the detail is still beautifully sharp – proof of both Soane’s eye for innovation and Coade’s brilliant craftsmanship.
Next time you visit, look up 👀
Have you ever noticed them before?
We’re open on Early May Bank Holiday, Monday 4 May, 10am–5pm.

A closer look at 'a rose, a bridge, a house'.
Across Pitzhanger, Phoebe Collings-James’s 'Infidels' series unfolds in elongated forms, open mouths and richly worked surfaces — suggesting beings held in a ruckus of joy, or perhaps a piercing scream.
Made using Caribbean coiling techniques, these sculptures reclaim the figure of the outsider.
See 'Phoebe Collings-James: a rose, a bridge, a house' until 14 June.
