Next Sunday ☀️ all are welcome to celebrate the release of Chicago Signs & Symbols: Volume 2 at @hoofprintchicago ! We’ll be making signs as well as documenting and uploading images to the archive for future publication. Stop by 3143 S Morgan St on Sunday 12/7 between 1-4pm and pick up a copy of the new zine from Tenoch Press ( @atlanaw ) and @shapeshiftpress . Volume 2 features an interview with photographer, curator and archivist Oscar Arriola @oscararriola , with additional photography submitted by Steven Melendez @stevenmmelendez , Julia Buck @ceramicarchives , and Maddie Vaccaro @moonbaddiemaddie . Thanks to all who contributed and hope to see you there! … @chicagosignsandsymbols is a project that asks, what makes Chicago signs unique? How are signs cultural indicators of our social realities? What can be understood about Chicago’s past, present, and future through semiotics? And how do you see yourself reflected in the signs around you?

𝓅𝑜𝓇𝓉𝒶𝓁𝓈 🕸️🚪🕳️🌀 is a publication about time travel, surveillance, mutual aid, and grief. I wrote and gathered images over many train rides spent on the CTA. The book weaves through time and space with references to song lyrics and texts from sources like Billie Holiday, 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘮 by Mark Fisher, 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 by Octavia Butler, and 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯 by Ursula K. Le Guin. This summer I had the opportunity to make it into a zine during the Summer Risograph Residency at @uic.print.lab . A limited run of 50 books were printed in aqua, sunflower, fluorescent pink, and black Risograph inks with a hit of white ink on the cover. I wanted to experiment with different binding techniques so half of the books were bound using a Japanese stab stitch method, while the other half were spiral-bound with clear plastic coils. I’ll have some of these available at the Open Archive for the book release tomorrow at 6:30. All are welcome to attend. Hope to see you there 🕸️✨

Shape Shift Press is a publishing endeavor that seeks to blur the boundaries between print, animation and beyond through collaborations with artists. Please join us this Tuesday, September 9th at 6:30pm in UIC’s Open Archive to celebrate the release of two publications: 𝓬𝓲𝓬𝓪𝓭𝓪 𝓼𝓸𝓾𝓷𝓭𝓼 (made w/ @keemabin7 + @flatlands_press ) and ⓟⓞⓡⓣⓐⓛⓢ completed during the @uic.print.lab Summer Risograph Residency. Learn about the Open Archive, UIC’s Print Lab, and view works on display made by Junior Pacheco @junii.ooo and myself during the summer residency. All are welcome! Video Description: a Risograph-printed animation made during the residency with the Shape Shift Press logotype — an eye within a crystal ball surrounded by the text “Shape Shift Press” overlaid on top of a growing, radial gradient shifting hues between orange, pink, cyan, and yellow.

The 6th annual @chicagoprintersguild publishers fair was one for the books 📚😮‍💨! Thanks to all who schlepped down to the Chicago Cultural Center in the middle of marathon madness. 1. Pub Fair tote featuring an illustration by our marketing and promo wizard @future_juju plus a type lockup by my partner in design crimes @coldnvile . To top it off, pro shop print job was done by mad professor @mikefacekillah who has taught me more about printing than he could possibly know! The design is printed with white silkscreen ink on a liberty brand black tote and it’s got plenty of room for all your squeegees and blocks. 2. Screen recording walkthrough of the event splash page I designed and programmer extraordinaire @nikkiglyn did the heavy lifting to get our custom css working as envisioned within our CMS’s funky constraints…IYKYK 😮‍💨 3. @manny_suena suggested we do some wayfinding banners to help people find the space. Then @future_juju suggested we use some archival photos “and hit it with a paintball gun”… this is where we landed and it was a surprise how seamlessly it fit into the backdrop 👀 4. Fun fact: the space was originally the site of the first Chicago Public Library, which is why it’s emblazoned with symbols from around the world, text in several different languages, names of authors and these astrological symbols on the glistening Tiffany dome. Here is a zoom-in detail of the Astro dome. … (captions continued in the comments)

Hi, I’m Lisa (aka @shapeshiftpress .) I created this page specifically for a new(-ish) publishing endeavor I’ve been embarking on. For those that don’t know, i am an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work explores design as a social practice. My work incorporates sounds, images, and lights as materials to obfuscate boundaries and emphasize multiple perspectives. I like to navigate the slippery tensions between emergent technologies and traditional print-based design tools. I also strive to make work that stirs the senses—making people question their perceptions and examine their own layers of humanity. Earlier this year, I started Shape Shift Press as an outlet for publishing artist books, pieces of writing, and other collaboratively produced print materials. Meet me at the 6th Annual CPG Publishers Fair this Saturday 10/12 at the Chicago Cultural Center (Preston Bradley Hall / 78 E. Washington St.) between 11am-5pm #allforprintforall Special thanks to the staff at @chicagoculturalcenter and DCASE @chicagodccase for making this event possible.
