We are delighted to announce that our special guest at the next meeting of MVPS is a genuine British music video directing great. The one and only Dawn Shadforth.
Dawn has directed many brilliant music videos for a wide range of artists - including really iconic ones for Kylie Minogue, Moloko, All Seeing I and Goldfrapp. She broke through in the late Nineties, introducing a new vision that set creative standards over the next two decades, making groundbreaking videos with the most cutting edge practitioners of pop and dance music.
More recently, @shadforthandco has been focussed on directing longform drama, on TV shows including Trust and Adult Material, to considerable acclaim. Trespasses, the Channel 4 drama which she directed last year, has just picked up several nominations at the BAFTA TV awards - including Best Direction.
So it’s going to be very exciting to talk to Dawn about how it all started, show some of her classic videos (and how they made every artist she worked with that bit cooler), and how they inform her work now.
With lots more besides, as we take another wide-ranging excursion around the art and cultural impact of the music videos, since the 1970s to the present day, at the next meeting of Music Video Preservation Society at The Mildmay Club on Friday April 17th. Last year, Shane Meadows Channel 4 series “The Virtues” swept Series Mania’s main international competition on the back of critical and audience acclaim. This year, the boldest title in the selfsame section may come again from Channel 4: Lucy Kirkwood’s “Adult Material,” which lifts the lid on the adult entertainment industry, through the travails and undoing of a caring mother and veteran porn star. Never explicit nor ogling, but still sure to shock some in its more outré sex exposition, “Adult Material” still tackles highly serious themes – female pleasure, and the red lines in sexual consent, with one Harvey Weinstein moment which underscores the toxic mix of entertainment industry power and assumed sexual prerogative. “Channel 4 does things which other broadcasters just don’t dare to do,” says Hefszberg. NOVEMBER....DECEMBER - HIS DARK MATERIALS ✨🌪🌑🐇❄️🌊⛴⚙️. This TV show of these iconic books is so epic and beautiful still available to view on BBC iPlayer. I am so very proud to have been a part of it. I found the books by @philippullmanofficial profoundly moving, completely bloody mind blowing, when I first read them. Even more re-reading now older and with half a lifetime to reflect on. They definitely grow with you. This isn’t just for kids. Although mine became obsessed with the series. When I was asked back in early 2018 to direct an episode I couldn’t not be part of it. What an amazing project. What an absolutely stellar cast (more on them in posts to follow...) but especially @dafnekeen who is basically just as special as Lyra herself, the gorgeous sets and design by #JoelCollins and script by #JackThorne the locations, the daemons and puppeteers and with the whole thing pushed uphill fuelled by a burning love for these books and their need to bring them properly to screen by #janettrantor @rattling_of_a_mirror and #laurieborg well f****** done. So inspiring.
My episode follows Lyra as after she has escaped the clutches of Mrs Coulter into the world of the Gyptians. With a few revelations along the way and her learning to read that #alethiometer Sorry it’s taken me so long to post.
