This school year, funding from the New York City Council allowed us to expand our programming to schools across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx, reaching almost 2,000 students directly with equitable environmental education. 📚 We need your help to retain this funding for the next school year so we can keep growing! 🌱
As part of the Save Our Compost coalition, we focused on reducing food waste from schools and educating youth about how food scraps can be turned into a community resource through composting. 🍂🐜 With our students, we tested in-school compost tumblers, built a school garden, planted in playgrounds and tree pits, brought cafeteria food scraps to community composting sites, and introduced students to new fresh fruits and vegetables. 🥕🌻

Community composting is essential to meeting NYC’s zero waste and climate goals. These programs reduce landfill waste, cut climate pollution, create healthy soil for our parks and gardens, and provide local green jobs. They also help boost participation in the city’s curbside organics program, are a proven rat mitigation strategy, and engage a wide range of New Yorkers across age, background, and interest.
Join us Tuesday morning on the steps of City Hall to advocate for community composting!
