“In exhibitions, we are usually eluded by the processes - what is unseen, unheard – and here, specifically, the ground that is not stepped on, symbolized by a part of the body amputated before it could even become whole. A transgenerational diaspora that, articulated with the movement for women’s liberation and empowerment in Iran, allows for the construction of a path that transcends the creator’s individuality and extends to her community: a community dispersed, excluded, dismembered across
the world.
Despite the devastating, oppressive, and violent undertone of Albayati’s body of work, there is also lightness and depth, another sense of time, if we allow it…where we are
overwhelmed by powerful emotions, that do not suffocate, but move us. When they try to steal our hope, the answer is to keep dreaming.” - from What Escapes Us, curator text

Tickets are limited, with early bird options now available ~ online from £7 / OTD £10 ~ link in bio 🖤
Tavalode Dobāre (Reborn) is a story of a journey, as we follow Setareh, a wandering soul, embodying different forms through layers of temporality & consciousness. From dream-state stars to the realm of reality, Setareh finds herself following a spiritual wound, until left with a melancholic hope in human form.
Through a transcultural use of Sicilian, Persian & Sufi poetry, music & ritual practice, this audiovisual work nestles an individual’s grief within a collective pain & longing for clarity.

Footage from Armenia’s Syunik region ~ honouring the Armenian genocide remembrance day last week 🤍
I don’t often post personal photos, but I can’t help but share these moments.
این نیز بگذره ~ this too shall pass
Throughout this past year, whilst the world has been upturning, this phrase saved us. Not only during witnessing the hard moments, but in the ability to savour and enjoy planning something so full of joy and love. The day itself was the same, an outpouring of love, where every detail had a meaning and purpose, deserving full presence. To have a day in my family home, totally transformed by my parents, surrounded by family & friends, was something too special to explain. As someone dear said, it wasn’t just a wedding, it was something that resonated deeper through our families’ units, and I think we are still yet to understand how exactly…
Celebrate love, dance in bizzare moments, allow a space for people to express whats right for them without judgment.
Beyond grateful to everyone who made our wedding unique 🙏 huge gratitude to my maman’s inner child who decorated to her heart’s content, and to her adult self for managing everything ❤️
Photos from my incredibile, high functioning production team of friends, and Reza jan (who only those present will understand his specific brilliance).

Introducing Roxanna Albayati - who will be with us tomorrow, in our exploration of cultural and traditional roots. She’ll be playing gheychak, an ancient instrument from folk and classical Persian music, known for its melancholic sonority, able to express deeply rooted emotions.
14:00 dastgāhHETK – iraani dastgāh muusika töötuba / Iranian dastgāh music workshop by Roxanna Albayati
18:00 pärimusHETK – pärimusimprovisatsiooni kontsert / folk improvisation concert by Roxanna Albayati, Andro Manzoni, Sofia Filippou & Kristjan Kannukene
Roxanna is an Iranian-Iraqi interdisciplinary artist, researcher and music educator. Driven by embodied artistic research, her transcultural practice centres around combining experimental music with multilingual art forms and audio-visuals, where her music merges cross-cultural improvisation with Persian traditional music and the physicality of performance. Roxanna explores the conscious/subconscious and self/other, interrogating their interplay internally, spiritually & materially, whilst considering this through the perspective of Orientalist constructions and female place in society, fascinated by process and natural evolution of discovery.

“When they try to steal our hope, the answer is to keep dreaming” - from Susana Chiocca‘s curator text from SHEKĀRE ĀZĀDI, spring 2025 in Porto
Every time I develop this body of work, I say to it
‘that’s it, we’re done…’
genuinely believing I can leave it behind, because it’s so painful.
The last time, I created a room filled with my mother’s voice - her story, my story, every Iranian women’s story. The night before I left Porto, I set up the exhibition space alone, just to listen to it one final time.
I cried, then laughed, then shut the space down.
If only it was that easy to shut these feelings down.
So of course, this work will always return.
And it’s always dedicated to the women of Iran.
Displaced @displaced.concerts is back tomorrow night ~ Friday 12th December ~ at @referencepoint180
After some months away, we’re returning with a night to mark our one year anniversary, opening with dialogue between artists and audience, a moment to feel free with words and reflections: something which happens so beautifully every event. This time, we’re dedicating more space for it. Followed by a line up which I’m personally more than impatient to play with.
Each event delves into my footage archive, a place for my nonsounding expression. This time, we’re featuring the incredible red cliffs at the Noravank Monestary in Armenia, when the sun kissed her surface at sunrise last summer. The 4am trip to catch the right light was worth it. Armenia has taught me too much about self preservation and discovery ~ it generates enough energy which cannot be contained in one place, and so your energy becomes dis-placed, left in various corners of the world.
Join us tomorrow for what some have named as an ‘internal shower for the soul’ ~ tickets are going, link in bio🕊️
