DISOBEDIENT SCIENCE | MEET THE ARTIST: DIRAR KALASH
Dirar Kalash is a musician and sound artist whose work spans a wide range of musical and sonic practices within a variety of instrumental, compositional and improvisational contexts. He is mostly known for his politically driven soundscape / electro-acoustic project "The Sonic Front", and the compositions "we can't breathe (for Eric Garner, George Floyd, and Frantz Fanon)" and "by any means necessary (for Malcolm X)".
Alongside his work in sound and music, Kalash extends his work to interdisciplinary research and education within the intersections of sound, literature, memory, experience and everyday life in Palestine through a focus on the politics of space and time. He has produced several solo and collaborative musical albums and is active as a touring musician. Additionally, he has created a number of sound installations, live audio-visual performances, and photography projects.
Dirar Kalash is joining us for Disobedient Science, a 2-day gathering at @pelican.house and @sladeschool , hosted by @radicalecology in partnership with UCL, LAHP and Afterall Research Centre on 7-8 May 2026.
The programme opens pathways for relational practices in art and activism that move beyond inherited scripts of colonial knowledge production and scientific rationalism, revealing instead how thinking and making are never disembodied, and how lived time and space are touched by scales both intimate and immense: geologic, historic, microscopic and planetary.

Barbie Mukoda is a London-based Flautist. Her experiments with silence and tone, has led to the artistic choice on using little to no vibrato across her three instruments; Piccolo Flute, Classical Flute and Alto Flute, whilst she explores the Improvisational realms.
Over the recent years, Barbie has played with BBC Elstree Concert Band, Lo-Fi, The London Video Game Orchestra, ONe_Orchestra New and Queen Charlotte’s Global Orchestra, recording at Abbey Road Studios and BBC Maida Vale Studios and being broadcast live over Resonance FM as a member of AMM All-Stars.
Today, Barbie’s World consists of intentional music making; whether that be solo, trio, wind band, orchestral or other, she indulges in the Classical, Improvisational and Experimental, Video Game Music and Show Tunes. She finds the variety of genres and musicians she plays with, as well as the artists whose Sound-Worlds she experiences as an audience member both stimulating and inspiring for her own World Building endeavours

Palestinian sound archive local angels Vol.2: with @scorpiossudan and @dirarkalash early summer bank holiday 3rd of May @newriverstudios few tickets left from the first release. Local Angels where we invite new and old friends to the stage. Kicking off our early summer programme with some beautiful guests... This time, The Scorpios are joining us in person for what will be an unforgettable set at our new home from home, New River Studios for May Bank Holiday. We’re so happy that Palestinian composer and experimental musician Dirar Kalash for be warming up for the band, with vinyl played by Palestinian Sound Archive until closing time.
The Scorpios are a band originally form Sudan that melds Arabic rhythms and guitar chops (and a kind of swooning cyclical ecstasy) with a raw Eastern funk feel, properly dismantling cultural barriers in pursuit of a unifying rhythmic bliss. Heavy bass, synths, horns and percussions drive through traditional Sudanese forms to create a sound that owes as much to Detroit as it does to Khartoum.

He has produced several solo and collaborative musical albums and is active as touring musician, who has also created several sound installations, live audio-visual performances and photography projects.
Palestinian Sound Archive is a celebration of music, spoken word and album artwork from historic Palestine, mainly from the 1960s – 1990s. It is part of Majazz Project, a record label and research platform founded by Mo’min Swaitat in 2020, spanning everything from field recordings of Bedouin weddings to revolutionary albums from the First and Second Intifadas, dabke, instrumental, synth, poetry, soul, folk songs and jazz. The IMPROVESISTANCE Assembly emerges from urgency and solidarity. It demands, in sound and music, nothing less than what Palestine demands: the breaking of the siege, an end to starvation, and the pursuit of total freedom and justice.
The ever evolving formation centres electro-acoustic processing of sounds from Palestine - expanded instrumentally and electronically - forging a sonic force that does more than express or protest, . It persists, resists, and amplifies in real time. This is not metaphorical. This is sound as a direct act of solidarity, disruption, and insistence.
This formation brings together Dirar Kalash on saxophone and live electronics, and Maxwell Hallett on drums.

Drummer and producer Betamax (aka Maxwell Hallett) is best known as a founder member and producer of the London based trio The Comet Is Coming, featuring saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings and astral synth master Danalogue. The production duo of Betamax and Danalogue is also known as Soccer96. Betamax cut his producer's teeth on three LPs (one Mercury prize-nominated) and three EPs with The Comet.
Along side the dark grooves of Coma World feat Pete Bennie, Champagne Dub is Betamax's infamous live space-dub outfit. Betamax is also a member of the two revered bands Super Best Friends Club and Hot Head Show.
Recently max has been collaborating with his own mother - the Betamax vs Sylvia Hallett cassette came out in jan 2026 (Picot label). This in the wake of Betamax's production of Betamax vs Clive Bell, an album he completed in 2021 with his dad (on the Byrd Out label).
