‘Blood bubble’. About care and proximity. My tiny ode to the plight of a people under occupation and oppression. I physically manifested the wonderful forest school technique for teaching children knife safety. When kids use blades for whittling and carving, you tell them about the zone around them where if someone enters, they may draw blood 🩸 - their ‘blood bubble’. If someone gets too close, you stop carving and ask the person to move to a safe distance. It worked for the collaborative art factory space in my show, due to the carving activity, but it also speaks to the idea of who we take care of. Who is in our metaphorical blood bubble. Who do we neglect and not think of, perhaps far from us, and outside of our perceived sphere of harm. In the show, people used pencils stubs (🙏 @jamie_eade_art ) to make earrings to raise money for the incredible @medicalaidpal So many! So creative! They took away some of the fruits of their labours and added many more to the shop. Other gallery visitors bought the earrings, donating directly. Hundreds of £ raised, and so much craft, care and communion. Such a pleasure to run this and talk with people and show other work too. A privilege too to exhibit with part new artist family below and thanks so much to all the team at @artistsopenhse and @ual_thehub : Sonia Stanyard @sonia_stanyard_art Gina Cross @ginacross_ Katy Binks @katybinks Lucinda Newton Dunn @spacetothink_studio Kei Tominaga @kei_tominaga Sarah Haddon-Grant and Charles Gibault @maisonsacha Tania Yakunova @anni_tett Atela Grua Vidal @alteagrau Aneta Mackonyte @anettamacko Helen Dixon @hahahelen Anna Butler @annabutlerceramics The show has ended now but @artistsopenhse continues this weekend (16/17 May) with 500 artists across the south London bubble check them out near you xxx

Last weekend was so full of joy and mischief it was a delight. As part of a group art show with friends from @mass.sculpture I had the outside of legendary Peckham Safehouse venue to play with. The blocked up arched windows looked like they needed a lil something, and I couldn’t help thinking of classical frescos of religious scenes. As a pacifist atheist being deeply against the wars (in which my country is complicit) being waged by various homicidal maniacs who feel they have a mandate from God, it was perhaps a strange choice. Maybe it speaks to the saturation of my early life in religious iconography. There are universal truths in all religions and though I avoid them, they are part of my culture, with deep influence that can be used for good or ill. Just the other day I was remarking to my kids about how in school we had to sing hymns every morning like ‘Onward Christian Soldiers, marching as to war...’. I don’t recall any interrogation of what it meant (it is actually not about the Crusades even though it very much sounds like it), and is something I’d like to think I’d conscientiously object to now, if not start a mini rebellion and get expelled 😂 Anyway here is my version of the Angel Gabriel giving the good news to Mary, or actually perhaps God herself descending to smite Pete Hegseth or Netenyahooo 🪽 Thanks to curators @marylynmolisso @alexsw19 @ali_darke @samshawpainter and the wonderful @blinkandyoullmissitart show next door who made it extra fun and to all my fellow exhibitors @anda.albu.artist @anna_kiff @annepetters @artfledgling @carolineburgesstextileartist @cashaspeek @charlottevanberckel_ @eleanorhavsteen.art @hennyburnett @jaspergarvida @merriecarltonart @nikki.holy @sian_intoclay @siobhan_tate_artist @tessacampbellfraserart #offcut #frecos #wastenotwantnot #londonstreetart

Love adventure playgrounds. Never had one near me growing up, but I seem to be making up for it now :) Had a wonderful day teaching the different methods to build a BOUNCE playground from bike tyres at the amazing Lollard Adventure Playground @lollardap . The team of playworkers quickly got up to speed with the different processes to go from a bundle of used tyres to a bouncy climbing web and swings. They were getting to design, climb and play on it which was so fun to see, with all the valuable qualities of the material that would otherwise be landfull - like UV stability, flexibility, stretch, strength, being waterproof PLUS it’s endlessly and easily adaptable, so the team can help the kids add to and redesign the bouncy spaces when they want a new set up at no cost to their funding or the environment! Win win win! Part of the training provided by our friends and ace collaborators Made from Scratch @mfsplay who it’s always such a joy to work with. It was a privilege to meet the passionate playworking team in a space so packed with rich experiences for the local kids in Lambeth. Long live adventure playgrounds! Please support your local one, and shout for any extra bounce for your space xxx

Was explaining to @nikki.holy how I made the ‘Shallots’ treehouse and promised to share the process video of using a bandsaw mill to cut slivers of oak to wrap around the shapes. With thanks to the brill @farfadets_wood_scierie_mobile_ for their sawdust making expertise 🙏 Let me know if anyone needs any other tree based vegetables 😋 #bandsawmill #treehouse #localmaterials #sustainabledesign #habitablevegetables

This summer, amid the craziness of the world, I had a perfect pocket of joy at @shambalafest where myself and my amazing friend Lizzy Fleming @mfsplay brought the 100% reCYCLEd bouncy playground system, so the children of the festival could design, make, bounce, swing and play in mid-air between the trees 🌳♻️🚲 Watching it evolve over the 5 days was a dream, with children experimenting with moves and shapes, and weaving their visionary designs ❤️❤️❤️ Thanks to @tribewoodland and @joebeek for inviting me to bring the bounce, what an amazing crew, such joy working alongside them, adding our bouncy rubber web fun alongside the magic of the kids-built timber structures being shaped around us. More of this please! We can bring this to a school or festival near you, get in touch to discuss 🛠️ Thanks to the amazing Shambala festival, what a setting to make in, and also to my beloved independent bike shops from where I sort and clean their used tyres and tubes and process them into endless play components. Support them where you can, times are hard for the small businesses and they have so much knowledge, expertise and care @seabasscycles @finchesemporium @vgcycles ❤️❤️❤️ #play #installation #buildyourown #kidsdesign #childledlearning #playgrounddesign #sustainabledesign #zerowaste #trashtotreasure #teachdesignskills #makeyourownplayground

Last night was a joy to see a creation I had dreamed of, come to life, as a mini itinerant workforce of gallery visitors joined in spontaneously to labour at one of the art workstations and contribute to charity and make beautiful things for themselves, their loved ones and for the collective. The evening zoomed by and I didn’t take enough photos or even be at the making station enough, but it worked without me 😝 and people made beautiful things, and I enjoyed lots of meaningful conversations and sharing. The catastrophic bombardment of Gaza was not far from anyone’s minds, and the refuge of company and connection, of making and sharing felt so meaningful amid the horror. Early sales raised £120 for @medicalaidpal which is tiny I know but is something and I hope to make more during the run of the show. My piece is just one item in the @mass.sculpture cohorts show, there is so much to see and appreciate, let me know if you can make it before the end next Saturday 19th July, open 12-5pm every day til then at Thames-Side Studios Gallery, London, SE18 5NR Thanks so much to everyone who took part ❤️ and to @cashaspeek and @jamie_eade_art for the pencil ends ✏️
