Night out at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle tonight. This ornate theatre was built in 1837 and so in the same year as Queen Victoria ascended to the throne. The architectural style is very much of that era and still looks hugely impressive today. Capacity of 1,249 making it the second largest theatre in the North East behind the Sunderland Empire (capacity of around 2,000). Legally Blonde was the show and my wife, son, and his female friend throughly enjoyed it! My daughter decided she had better things to do - partying with her friends. The Hall of Grails is starting to take shape…a stairway to heaven if you will. I decided towards the end of last year to try to put together a collection of what I think of as being the definitive toys of ‘my era’, in the best condition I could find without breaking the bank. So far so good. Here are three of my personal grails all in drool inducing condition. The Leonardo (Hero Turtles) is graded at 75% and the Batman is a 75+. Both grades seem harsh to me. The Leonardo in particular looks virtually flawless to my admittedly untrained eye. The series 1 Hulk Hogan Hasbro is ungraded as yet, but would grade highly I hope as there is not a scuff on him. ‘There’s no telling what a woman will do’ - Batman, August 1963. Another little taste of the Silver Age before I post about some other things. Don’t worry though - there is much more Silver Age still to come. Detective Comics no.318 from August 1963. Cover by Carmine Infantino and inked by Murphy Anderson, a classic combo. Interior art by Jim Mooney with additional inking by Sheldon Moldoff and Mike Esposito. Written by Dave Wood. An early Catman appearance and a strange storyline involving Batwoman masquerading as a new Catwoman in the name of misguided love. Note the comments about women’s purported behaviour from Batman (fourth photo) which would not be included today. Detective Comics 332 - cover date of October 1964 but hit the street in August 1964: this predates the onset of Batmania a couple of years later. Another one in tremendous condition! Batman 190 from January 1967 but with a cover date of March 1967 in pretty immaculate condition. Art by Chic Stone. Written by Gardner Fox and inked by Sid Greene. The latest arrival: possibly the greatest action figure ever produced? Got to be up there. I remember vividly being bought this from Joseph’s toy shop in Sunderland when I was 4 years old. That would probably mean I never in fact owned the 12 back version, even back in the day! This is AFA graded at 75+ and is a 23 back. The grade seems a bit harsh to me. The colours are very striking still. I have tagged AFA so they can check it again. Another of my grails ticked off.
