We’re cracking down on the pothole plague with tougher measures to ensure that councils deliver real improvements to their local roads.
The new rules mean councils must show that they are spending government funding on fixing potholes and maintaining roads, or else risk losing around a third of their funding for this year.
This means greater transparency for taxpayers and smoother, safer journeys for drivers.
Boost for better buses 🚌
We’re providing £3 million in funding to support six mayoral authorities making the transition to franchised bus models - empowering local mayors to shape services around their communities.
Franchising will enable mayors to provide more reliable buses and have more control of fares and new services that better connect rural communities to jobs and education.

You may have seen that there’s new government guidance on screen time for under 5s. The main message? Limit screen use wherever possible.
- For children under 2, avoid screens except for shared moments like family video calls.
- For ages 2–5, try to keep screen time to 1 hour a day or less.
When screens are used, choose slow-paced, simple content that’s easy for little brains to follow.

Our Road Investment Strategy 3 (RIS3) is going to benefit millions of drivers 🚗
The £27 billon investment will improve connectivity around the country and allow National Highways to resurface over 9,000 kilometres worth of motorway and major A-road lanes.
Spread across five years, the plan puts more money into maintaining our roads, delivering smoother roads with fewer potholes for drivers, businesses and freight operators who use them every day.
We’ve also confirmed 16 key road schemes on local roads, helping create thousands of new jobs and homes across the country.
