If you read the Gloucester Daily Times between the years 2000 and 2019, you probably encountered Journal Pages, the bi-weekly musings of my mother Susan. I have fond memories of people stopping me in the grocery store or on the street to tell me how much they enjoyed her latest article. At one time or another, she was bound to address a topic that youād find thought-provoking or that just might produce a smile of recognition.
As anyone who knows her will tell you, my Momās approach to life is one of joy and wonder. This is evident in every conversation, in every interaction, and in every word written. For 35 years she was the face of Gloucester Music, a hub of activity where people from all walks of life were always greeted as friends. She kept journals for her entire adult life; stacks of notebooks that might someday become a novel. Before that could happen she was given the opportunity to write an op ed in the GDT. As a result she was then offered a regular column which she called Journal Pages and regularly contributed articles for nearly 20 years.
Her granddaughter Julia has organized and selected a sampling of subjects from this overwhelming body of work. My only goal for this project was to present my Mom with the printed book sheād always aspired to publish. But when it was completed we realized it had become something more than that. We ended up printing a limited number of books, to be made available to anyone who wants to own a copy. Twenty dollars covers the cost of printing, shipping, and a donation to Alzheimerās research.
DM me @jess.demarjian for details if youāre interested š¦ā¤ļø
Another surprise: when heading back from the Planet Haig show at @cccgalleries we were passing through Philly and stopped at @monsterveganphilly for some eats and to experience the decor. Neither disappointed ā highly recommended. Such a cool place.
Anywaaaay
On my way to the restroom, I glanced at a small grouping of artworks (seen in the first picture) on darkened wall. One of the pieces caught my eye because it looked like something I mightāve done. After doubling back and inspecting it, it turns out it WAS something Iād done⦠in 1999! This was from a time when Iād randomly send art to people I liked (if anyone remembers Oltgasms) and @unclelloydkaufman got quite a few Toxie scribbles.
So, it turns out that a few years back Lloyd did a screening or signing or something at Monster Vegan and as a thank-you @tromateam sent them a package of DVDs and this (photocopy of my) artwork, which Lloyd lovingly signed āToxie loves Monster Veganā.
Amazing to think Iād ever see something like this somewhere when it could have easily ended up circular-filed. You never know where a scribble might land!
Many thanks to @unclelloydkaufman@tromateam and @monsterveganphilly for caring enough to keep it alive.
