Set on a rolling site above the Atlantic, the architecture opens outward, framing horizon, water, and sky as part of the experience of living. A dialogue between past and present, where tradition is not repeated, but carried forward. You’ve been in the sun all day. Your skin still holds the warmth. You bring a cool drink out, find a chair facing the water, and stay a while. This wraparound terrace was designed for that hour. When the light softens, the candles are worth lighting, and the breeze off the water shifts the pace of the day. We often talk about how a space should function, but what we’re really considering is how it feels at the end of the day, when all you want is to sit outside and not think about going back in. Longer days ahead, with summer just around the corner. A place like this draws you outside, to the pool, the porch, and the open air. Architecture that meets the season and makes the most of it. A roof that defines the experience of the house. Steeply pitched and thatch covered, it draws from the Polynesian longhouse, shaped for shade, airflow, and life in the Hawaiian climate. ON VIEW NOW––New Richard Sharp Gallery and inaugural exhibition “Thomas Cole: An American Visionary” at the @thomascolesite The new exhibition presents a dynamic installation of landscape paintings, painting objects, and an easel of Thomas Cole (1801–1848). The show explores his evolution into an artist of international renown whose paintings conveyed a visual identity for a young nation. The exhibition features an iconic Cole painting newly gifted to the collection by Richard T. Sharp. The exhibition is part of the Cole Site’s 2026 initiative #TCPaintingtheNatureofAmerica The Richard Sharp Gallery was made possible by a generous donation from Richard T. Sharp to engage and inspire new generations. Sharp is a longtime supporter of the Thomas Cole Site and has gifted to the collection the largest amount of artwork by, and objects related to, Thomas Cole from a private individual outside of the artist’s family. The gallery is designed by #ArchitecturalDigest 100 Stephen Shadley @stephenshadley Installation views Peter Aaron/OTTO @peteraaron Group photo: Amanda Malmstrom, TCNHS Associate Curator; Stephen Shadley, Designer & Trustee; Emma Davidson Tribbs, Chairman; Maura O’Shea, Executive Director, Richard T. Taylor Street, Photographed by @peteraaron San Francisco, California, 1982 “On the way to an architectural photography assignment, I saw an astounding sight: the facade of a residential building being painted in the style of an abstract expressionist artwork. I pulled out my 4×5 view camera from the trunk of my car and made several black and white pictures. I later learned that the building was being waterproofed with tar, but the graphic, abstract, and surrealist nature of this picture makes it one of my favorite images.” Editioned Prints Available Here & Nowhere Else. #peteraaron#editionedprints#architecture#wallart#walldecorattacurated

Grateful to my mentor in scholarly design, Robert A.M. Stern. Honored to see this work featured in The Wall Street Journal.

A house defined by two distinct experiences. To the street, it draws on regional vernacular, with multi-pane windows, peaked tile roofs, and closely set volumes. To the ocean, it opens outward, with sweeping curves, glass expanses, and a more fluid connection to the landscape. After a day spent outside, these spaces offer places to return to, where architecture frames the horizon, the light, and the feeling of being near the water. This bedroom sits suspended between forest and water, with a wall of movable glass that dissolves the boundary between shelter and landscape. Natural wood and muted sage tones echoing the coastal grasses create a quiet palette. Here, we let the view and ever-changing natural light become the true luxury. From Science Hill, students see the @yalepeabodymuseum ’s new glass tower rising above the campus — its form a modern interpretation of the original tower’s iconic spires. The design reflects the museum’s historic presence, connecting past, present, and future. Photo by @peteraaron / @ottoarchive
