New England moment--breezeway link from a courtyard of native plants to the woods beyond. The simple form of this house draws on barn and stable buildings for its inspiration. @kligerman.ad 📸@richardpowersphoto
Great Dixter--architect Edwin Lutyens' 1910-12 house that combined medieval buildings and new construction with inventive skill. A "Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" interior--stairs, hidden passages and interior windows that create an episodic and ever delightful interior (and, by extension, exterior) world. The gardens echo the magic--an extraordinary world of flowers, immense shrubbery and outdoor rooms by Christopher Lloyd and Fergus Garrett.
The Isaac Bell House--McKim, Mead & White 1882. For cotton broker Isaac Bell (he retired at the age of 32) and his wife, Jeannette (sister of NY Herald owner and sportsman James Gordon Bennett, Jr.). Those who know me know this house is a perennial favorite. Recently reshingled and undergoing further restoration work by @kirbyperkins . See new shingles, last 2 slides.
Summertime--nighttime and daytime. Two interiors from "Summer by the Sea: Cottages from Watch Hill to Little Compton". Revisiting the simple summer life. 📸 @readmckendree , styling by @matthewgleasonstylist . Book available now @phaidonpress . Link in BIO.
Monticello--Thomas Jefferson's Charlottesville, Virginia home. Not only the author of the Declaration of Independence and President of the United States, Jefferson was an extraordinary architect, whose houses (he had two himself, this one and Poplar Forest) are renowned for their elegance, inventive interpretation of classical design and links to their Virginia landscapes.
