This Colonial Williamsburg film, which premiered in 1973, depicts a master blacksmith and his assistants in Williamsburg, Virginia, as they forge and repair the community’s tools, farm implements, and firearms. 💥
The film’s name comes from the epitaph of Williamsburg blacksmith Hugh Orr, who rose to become a prominent businessman in the city, but whose tombstone remembers him simply as a “hammer Man.” The film features master blacksmith John Allgood, who worked at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for more than 30 years.
Produced and directed by Arthur L. Smith, the head of Colonial Williamsburg's audiovisual department, "The Hammerman in Williamsburg" was one of dozens of educational films produced for use in schools, museums, libraries, and television broadcasts.

It’s #PreservationMonth! This observance celebrates the nation’s heritage through historic places and the work it takes to protect them. This year is especially meaningful as we mark a century of preservation at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
The architectural preservation and research staff of Colonial Williamsburg are responsible for the care and scholarly interpretation of buildings in the Historic Area. This work includes preservation and stewardship of historic structures, design of new reconstructions, historic interiors, curation of the architectural collections, and ongoing research on the city's built and cultural environment.
Recently, our team took advantage of the warm weather to clean historic stone features, including the lion and unicorn at the front of the Governor’s Palace. Using a gentle approach (horse shampoo and soft brushes), they carefully removed years of grime while protecting the surface. 🧼
