Community Update: The Canning Student Center and University Center at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois is taking shape quickly. Recent aerial drone photos show the full footprint of the future three story, approximately 144,000 square foot facility. Exterior walls are rising, structural steel is still being set at the main entrance, and the overall shape of the building is now clearly visible. The $101.6 million project is designed by Holabird and Root, with Path Construction serving as general contractor. The new center will consolidate student services, provide expanded gathering spaces, and strengthen Harper College’s role as a regional higher education hub. Completion is currently targeted for Summer 2027 and will mark one of the most significant campus upgrades in recent years. What project should be covered next? UCA officially kicked off our first partnership meeting with @chicago.dot - and calling it a success would be an understatement. The room was filled with contractors, utilities, locators, and design engineers all coming together to tackle jobsite challenges and delays through open, solution-driven conversations. The energy, collaboration, and ideas shared set the tone for something truly impactful. Best of all, this meeting sparked the launch of a new Quarterly UCA Chicago Coordination Meeting, giving contractors a direct line to CDOT to address project-specific issues and improve outcomes across the city. We’re excited about what’s ahead and proud to be building stronger connection that lead to better projects! Community Update: Harper College’s new Canning Student Center and University Center are rising on campus in Palatine, Illinois. The 144,000-square-foot facility is designed by Holabird & Root with WTW Architects and is being built by Path Construction, with the Illinois Capital Development Board as the owner. It will centralize key student services, student life, and house the University Center and Hospitality Management programs, transforming the campus “front door.” Construction mobilized in early 2025, with substantial completion targeted for Fall 2026 and building opening planned for Summer 2027. A joint venture plans to convert Salesforce’s former Midwest headquarters in River North into 153 market-rate apartments. The JV partners, Path Construction and WindWave Real Estate, paid $17 million for the ground floor and floors five through 10 of the building, located at 111 W. Illinois St. The second through fourth floors will remain occupied by the Erikson Institute, a higher-learning institution. On October 28, CDB attended an I-Beam Signing Event at the Philip J. Rock Center and School. The event marked the start of construction for a 24,665 square-foot, state-of-the-art building dedicated to serving children with hearing and vision disabilities and their families. Local officials, community leaders, supporters, and CDB staff gathered to sign the ceremonial I-beam, reinforcing our shared commitment to a brighter future for these students. This new facility will replace the existing school and is designed to provide a nurturing, accessible environment, featuring dormitories, classrooms, and support spaces. Led by Path Construction, this ambitious project aims for USGBC LEED Silver certification, prioritizing sustainability every step of the way.
