💜💛🩶Growing Together💜💛🩶 is a housing prototype designed to introduce gentle density suitable for families of all types and scales in areas dominated by single-family homes. A winner of the Small Lots, Big Impact Competition organized by @citylabatucla in collaboration with LA4LA, the L.A. Mayor’s office @mayorofla and the L.A. Housing Department, the project continues our ongoing research into redefining what—legally and architecturally—constitutes a single family. Our recent work with multi-family typologies embraces the family as an entangled entity of different interdependencies, including spatial, economic, and legal concerns. In this prototype for city-owned lots in Los Angeles, our approach begins by subdividing a narrow existing lot into three parcels. A primary unit is designed for each parcel, with one unit also featuring a junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). Each unit is accessed from the exterior via its own terrace. While a set of party walls subdivide the building, adjacent units can be cooperatively linked via a continuous circulation spine along the site’s central axis. The resulting building fabric can be legally and architecturally subdivided in myriad ways to accommodate multi-generational or chosen families as well as alternative ownership models. As a collection of spaces, Growing Together doesn’t prescribe private or communal life; it is embedded with both possibilities equally, offering agency to users seeking to share new habits in domestic settings. The jury noted: “Growing Together is handsome, well-thought out, and buildable. The aggregation of spaces is successful at creating unique outdoor courtyards that are usable, differentiated, private, and intimate, but as a whole the building manages to reads consistently across the site.” 🙏 @danacuff @christopherhawthorne @jonbtate @mmmosarchitects #madeatmacdowell @macdowell1907 #wip • • • • • #outpostoffice #outpostofficearchitecture #multifamily #triplex #archi #designer #architect #knowltonschool #next_top_architects #nexttoparchitects #nextarch

🎉🎉🎉Outpost Office is one of the winners of Los Angeles’ Small Lots Big Impacts competition in the Gentle Density Category!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Small Lots, Big Impact was organized by @citylabatucla in collaboration with LA4LA, the L.A. Mayor’s office @mayorofla and the L.A. Housing Department. The jury noted, “Growing Together is handsome, well-thought out, and buildable. The aggregation of spaces is successful at creating unique outdoor courtyards that are usable, differentiated, private, and intimate, but as a whole the building manages to reads consistently across the site.” 🙏 @danacuff @christopherhawthorne @jonbtate @mmmosarchitects The competition’s 350+ submissions demonstrate ideas for designing and building a type of housing that is sorely needed in Los Angeles today: new starter homes for the 21st century. The last time the housing industry produced small, compact homes that were attainable for everyday people was just following WWII. In this competition, the submissions update that old approach by re-introducing smaller, affordable homes but doing so on infill lots that utilize recent legislation to hold multiple units, make better use of our limited urban land, and still fit into their residential surroundings. Special thanks to @macdowell1907 for the time and space to complete this proposal. #madeatmacdowell

We are delighted to share that our recent installation, Public Utilities, for Concéntrico, supported by MAS Context, will remain in Logroño, Spain, after the festival’s closure. The Logroño City Council has agreed to cede several of the interventions to the city to give continuity to the objectives of the projects and contribute to improving public spaces. Four proposals strategically located in different Logroño parts will prolong their presence. Our robotic work is notably temporary, but we’re honored to make a more permanent contribution to the urban landscape of beautiful Logroño. Public Utilities is a colorful installation inspired by modest utility markings on construction job sites. Often applied in bright, fluorescent colors, these preparatory markings indicate boundaries and provide instructions to workers. As instructions, these striking markings are usually indecipherable to passersby, but to the trained eye, they denote construction limits, survey markings, and utilities like power lines, gas, and communications. Public Utilities activates multiple public spaces, including Plaza Primero de Mayo and two area schools with dynamic inscriptions that suggest new programs and patterns of use for existing public spaces. Working at multiple scales, these public instructions will suggest new organizations and pathways, but their precise use is open to civic interpretation. Visitors and residents observe and inhabit the enormous graphic pattern throughout the drawing process in a large public performance, all choreographed by a small drawing robot.  At its core, Public Utilities is part of an ongoing investigation into the civic potential of notation. Can we make architecture through drawing — not as instructions for building, but as space itself? Many thanks to @ikergil of @mascontext , @jpenaibanez of @concentricofestival and @turftank for their incredible support of this project. When you visit @wexarts , you might notice some new installations from @outpostoffice . Color Block No. 2 invites visitors to interact with these modular furniture pieces in and around the Wex. Inspired by the center's architecture, Color Block No. 2 creates space for collaborating, socializing, and informal learning. On view through July 1, 2024. @outpostoffice is led by Ashley Bigham and Erik Herrmann, assistant professors at Ohio State’s @knowltonosu .

🩷🧡🩷🧡🩷Color Block No. 2 at the Wexner Center for the Arts (@wexarts ), the second phase of our year-long intervention at the Wex. 🩷🧡🩷🧡🩷Pictured: Block 3 of 4, at the Wex entry. Consisting of four large-scale, modular furniture units, Color Block No. 2 activates various in-between spaces both inside and outside the Wexner Center. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the pieces rather than simply view them, changing the dynamic usually experienced in a gallery or museum. The installation challenges both conceptual and physical institutional boundaries. Museum architecture often imposes divisions between gallery spaces and public areas, but this division is uniquely blurred at the Wex. Exhibition spaces and architectural features converge, and new spaces suggested by Color Block No. 2 extend these characteristics. These spaces for collaboration, socializing, and informal learning draw visitors’ attention from the building’s exterior to its interior. The furniture will be on the Wexner campus until Summer 2024. Outpost Office is honored to exhibit alongside three solo shows from Sahar Khoury (@saharkhoury2010 ), Jumana Manna (@jumanamanna ), and Harold Mendez (@nothing_prevents_anything ).
