Museums Beyond Walls - Bergkrystallen, Trondheim (NO)
@europan_norway #europan
Set in Leütenhaven / Midtbyen, this proposal responds to Europan’s call to transform a parking structure / former parking lot into an extroverted art museum - one that doesn’t just contain culture, but actively revitalises the historic centre and helps form a new cultural square in the city.
The project brings together Trondheim’s two public art museums (Trondheim Art Museum + Nordenfjeldske
Kunstindustrimuseum / National Museum of Decorative Arts and Design) into a single, public-facing home - with the space, care conditions, and flexibility needed for exhibitions, outreach, events, workshops, and new audiences.
Bergkrystallen riffs on Trondheim’s gabled roofscape and the idea of a “bergkrystal”: lifted gallery “crystals” emerging from a grounded base to shape a new civic arena.
A central cultural spine becomes the main circulation route — a continuous public passage that stitches interior + exterior together, aligns with city paths + nearby institutions (including the Trøndelag theatre), and keeps the museum porous, accessible, and in motion.
Diagrams in the carousel show:
— how the “crystals” rise from the base to form roof + light + volume
— how the spine connects multiple access points and builds an all-season public route
— how section stacks programmes while keeping the ground plane open + generous (and how the existing parking structure can be adapted / reused)
