by Alistair Ang, Architecture BSc (ARB/RIBA Part 1), UG04
From The Bartlett Summer Show 2025
This project reimagines a monolithic office complex in the City of London as a circular, mixed-use housing development in accordance with the 2040 City of London plan. The existing structure is retained and retrofitted to address the growing need for sustainable urban living, while embracing circularity through minimal demolition, material waste and carbon impact.
The design works across three interlocking scales over time: urban, building, and modular. The result is an adaptable, multi-programmatic neighbourhood embedded within the city, where living, working, and nature intersect.

We recently hosted our annual Architecture BSc Presentation Week at our Bloomsbury campus.
Over several days, students across all the design units on our undergraduate architecture programme shared their ongoing design work, offering a window into their developing creative thinking and technical skills, and sharing design directions and outcomes from their respective units.
Architecture BSc (ARB/RIBA Part 1) is our world-leading undergraduate programme, accredited by the Architects Registration Board and the Royal Institute of British Architects. During years 2 and 3 of the course, our students learn in design units, small studio communities led by practising architects and specialist tutors, each with their own design agenda.

Today, Wednesday 06 May, we launch a new event series: Disability, Deafness and Neurodiversity in Architecture
The Bartlett School of Architecture research cluster for Disability, Deafness, and Neurodiversity is intended as a long-term, internationally connected centre for researching the intersections of disability, deafness, and neurodiversity within the built environment and advancing disability praxis in architectural education, scholarship and beyond.
Four public seminars and workshops will explore these themes in architecture, foregrounding inclusive research, pedagogy and design practices.
We begin with this afternoon's online event, Crip and Civic Pedagogies, with an introductory talk by Jordan Whitewood-Neal and a facilitated discussion around key questions regarding the cluster’s future role in developing crip-led pedagogies at the Bartlett and beyond. Join us next week too for the follow-up workshop at the Zaha Hadid Foundation.
This work is funded by the Bartlett School of Architecture’s Just Environments Incubator, which supports projects that generate new forms of spatial, environmental, and socially just practices.

A project by the Bartlett's Prof CJ Lim will be on permanent display at the V&A East Museum (@vam_east ), opening this weekend (Saturday 18 April).
CJ Lim’s GuangMing Smartcity critically reframes the urban green revolution by interrogating hybrid ecological and landscape infrastructures, and proposes adaptive landscapes that extend beyond the resources of urban agriculture.
The work will be part of V&A East's free permanent gallery, Why We Make. This gallery comprises over 500 objects from the V&A’s collection spanning art, architecture, design, performance and fashion.

The Bartlett's Dr Guan Lee (@guan_lee_ / @grymsdykefarm ) will co-lead the British Pavilion at the 20th Venice Architecture Biennale, alongside UK-based curator Mike Lim (@idk_office ). Their curation will explore diaspora, ritual and impermanence through a UK–Malaysia collaboration rooted in living traditions.
They will be supported by a curatorial team including Maria McLintock (@mariaemclintock ) and Ben Swaby Selig (@benswabyselig ), in collaboration with Malaysian artisans Ng Chi Wang, Lee Shao Chin and Koh Eng Keat. Drawing on Malaysian traditions of ritual paper architecture (temporary structures made from recycled paper on bamboo frames) the installation - "a festival within a festival" - will take inspiration from the Hungry Ghost Festival, where ceremonial structures are created, used and released.
The 20th Venice Architecture Biennale will run from 8 May to 21 November 2027.

Last month, our Engineering and Architectural Design MEng students brought Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to life with a display of engineered, interactive pavilions.
For this year's pLAY! Festival, our first year students exhibited ten temporary pavilions in the park, showcasing experimental structures. The programme hosts this installation project annually in the park near our Stratford campus, giving our students a chance to test their designs 'in the wild'.
Our four-year integrated interdisciplinary master’s degree combines architectural design and creativity with engineering of the built environment. It was designed in close collaboration with industry and academic experts, combining design and technical expertise with the skills needed to become a future industry leader.
